Inanunsyo ng International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species na ganap nang “endangered species” ang Emperor penguin at Antarctic fur seal.
Sa ulat na ibinahagi ng IUCN kamakailan, ang pagiging endangered ng mga nabanggit na hayop ay dulot umano ng climate change sa Antarctica.
Base sa kanilang prediksyon, mababawasan ng 50% ang populasyon ng Emperor penguin pagpatak ng taong 2080.
Samantala, nangalahati na rin daw ang kabuuang populasyon ng Antarctic fur seal bunsod ng “reduced food availability” mula pa noong 2000.
Kaugnay nito, ang southern elephant seal naman daw ay nasa ilalim na ng “risk of extinction” dulot ng karamdaman o sakit.

“These important findings should spur us into action across all sectors and levels of society to decisively address climate change. The declines of the emperor penguin and Antarctic fur seal on the IUCN Red List are a wake-up call on the realities of climate change,” ayon sa pahayag ni IUCN Director General Dr. Grethel Aguilar.
Ayon naman sa CEO ng BirdLife International na si Martin Harper, ang pagiging endangered ng mga naturang hayop ay isang malaking tanda ng climate change na kasalukuyang nagaganap sa mundo.
“Penguins are already among the most threatened birds on Earth. The emperor penguin’s move to Endangered is a stark warning: climate change is accelerating the extinction crisis before our eyes. Governments must act now to urgently decarbonise our economies,” ani Harper.
