Itinalaga ni Pope Francis ang Pilipinong pari na si Fr. Efren Esmilla bilang isa sa tatlong bagong auxiliary bishops para sa Archdiocese of Philadelphia.

Sa ulat ng CBCP nitong Sabado, Disyembre 9, ipinahayag ni Esmilla sa isang press conference na nalulugod siya sa naturang pagtalaga sa kaniya ng pope.

“I ask all of the clergy, men and women religious, and lay faithful our beloved local Church to pray for me while knowing that I will pray for all of you so that I can see how to serve you best,” ani Esmilla.

“My great hope is that our beloved Archdiocese of Philadelphia will continue to grow spiritually and to grow in the number of souls as we all strive to be better missionary disciples for Jesus Christ in the world around us,” dagdag pa niya.

Si Esmilla ay isa umanong 61-anyos na tubong Nagcarlan, Laguna.

Bago lumipat sa United States, nagtapos siya ng kolehiyo sa San Beda University sa Maynila noong 1984.

Nagpari naman siya sa St. Charles Borromeo Seminary sa Wynnewood, Pennsylvania, kung saan nakakuha din siya ng master of divinity noong 1992.

Pagkatapos nito, inordenan siya sa pagkapari para sa Philadelphia archdiocese noong Mayo 15, 1993.

Dati umanong nagsilbi ang Pilipinong pari bilang parochial vicar sa St. John Chrysostom sa Wallingford, Pennsylvania, at sa Maternity of the Blessed Virgin Mary sa Philadelphia. Naglingkod din siya bilang assistant director ng pastoral formation sa St. Charles Borromeo Seminary.

Mula noong 2021, naglingkod si Esmilla bilang pastor ng St. James sa Elkins Park, Pennsylvania. Naging chaplain din daw siya ng Filipino Apostolate at spiritual director sa Legion of Mary.

Si Esmilla ang ika-apat na Pilipinong tinaguriang obispo sa US, kasama sina Bishop Oscar Solis ng Salt Lake City, Auxiliary Bishop Alejandro Aclan ng Los Angeles, at Auxiliary Bishop Anthony Celino ng El Paso-Texas.

Kasama naman niya bilang bagong itinalagang auxiliary bishops ang mga paring sina Keith Chylinski at Christopher Cooke.
