ANG pagtatayo ng mas maraming European diplomatic mission sa Maynila ay magandang senyales ng pagtaas ng interes ng European Union (EU) sa Pilipinas, pahayag ni Ambassador Franz Jessen, sa pagdiriwang ng samahan ng 2019 Europe Day kamakailan.

“Since I arrived in 2015, three new EU diplomatic missions have been established – Hungary, Poland and Sweden. We are now 15, up from 12,” pahayag ni Jessen sa idinaos na reception sa Makati kamakailan.

“This increase is a tangible reflection of the EU’s increased interest in the Philippines and, of course, of the increased weight of the Philippine economy and of its diplomacy,”dagdag pa niya.

Ang EU ang ikalawa sa may pinakamalaking ekonomiya sa mundo at nananatiling “biggest trading power” sa mundo. Noong 2018, nilagdaan nito ang isang Partnership Cooperation Agreement kasama ng pamahalaan ng Pilipinas upang pahintulutan ang mas maayos na kolaborasyon sa mga krusyal na, kabilang ang politikal, ekonomikal at mga pangkaunlaran.

Kinilala ni Jessen na nitong mga nakaraang taon, kalimitang ginagamit ng EU ang mga pangunahing balita sa Pilipinas. Matatandaang binatikos ni Pangulong Duterte ang samahan, sa pagsasabing sangkot at nais nito sa “international governing” sa ginagawang pagbatikos ng samahan sa kampanya laban sa ilegal na droga.

Gayunman, sa isang positibong anggulo, aniya “the greater recognition of the EU is welcome.”

“I am satisfied to see the increased awareness of the values for which the EU stands for. We are proud of our values, we don’t impose them on any partner, and we don’t hide them,” saad pa niya.

Ayon sa envoy, handa ang EU na makipagtulungan sa bansa sa pagsasailalim nito sa “rapid transformation.”

Hangad din niya na higit pang mailabas ng bansa ang potensyal, sa pagsasabing kumpiyansa siya sa “young, ambitious, increasingly better educated workforce” na papasok sa job market sa mga susunod na taon.

“The EU continues to stand ready to work with the Philippines, with President (Rodrigo) Duterte and his government to channel this great potential into further sustainable economic growth and to together promote a rules-based system, where the voices of all countries are fully respected: a system which in my view serves both our interests best,” aniya.
