TARGET ni Games and Amusement Board (GAB) Chairman Abraham ‘Baham’ Mitra na hubaran ng maskara ang mga propesyunal na liga na nagtatago bilang amateur.

“If you play for pay, you are a professional,” pahayag ni Mitra patungkol sa mga commercial basketball at volleyball league na magpahanggang ngayon ay hindi nagpapasailalim sa supervision ng government regulatory agency.

“We give them ample time. Siguro naman after one season puwede na silang magpatawag na propesyunal. Hindi kami naghahabol para sa sariling interest namin kundi para rin sa kanila. Kung under sila ng GAB supervision, all there athletes are secure if any untoward incident happened during the match.

Iginiit ni Mitra na libreng nakakakuha ng medical test at drug test ang mga players na lisensiyado ng GAB.

“Kaya gusto namin, magpa-lisensiya ang mga players. Hindi ito para sa amin kundi para sa kanila,” ayon kay Mitra kasabay ng paglilinaw na ang organizers o may-ati ng liga ang siyang tila umiiwas sa GAB supervision.

“We set a meeting, probably last na ito sa mga opisyal ng Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL), Philippine Super Liga (PSL) at Premier Volleyball League  (PVL) to remind them that they should be under the umbrella of the GAB,” sambit ni Mitra.

“If athletes of these three leagues play for pay, there is no doubt that they are considered professional athletes who should be under the supervision of GAB,” giit ni Mitra sa “Usapang Sports” ngTOPS (Tabloid Organization in Philippine Sports) kahapon sa National Press Club (NPC) sa Intramuros, Manila.

Iginiit ni Mitra, dating Governor at Congressman ng Palawan, na ang bayad sa lisensiya, gayundin sa parte ng pamahalaan sa ‘gate’ ay maliit lamang at direktang napupunta sa treasury department at hindi sa GAB.

“GAB, pursuant to Presidential Decree 871, is in charge of supervision and regulation of the conducts of all professional sports in the country, including basketball and volleyball,” pahayag ni Mitra.

“Clearly, players in the three commercial leagues (MPBL, PSL, PVL) are professional athletes, who receive renumeration for their services to their respective teams,” aniya.

Sa kabila ng katotohanan na may mga players ang mga naturang liga na kasalukuyang naglalaro sa UAAP, NCAA at iba pang collegiate league, tulad nang depensa ng kanilang mga managers, sinabi ni Mitra na kailangang ipatupad ang itinatadhana ng batas.

“Wala na tayong magagawa kung yun players nila na naglalaro ngayon sa mga commercial leagues ay nag-aaral at naglalaro pa din sa UAAP, NCAA at iba pang mga collegiate leagues. Let’s just follow the law,” aniya.

Bukod sa PBA (basketball), nasa pangangasiwa ng GAB ang mga sports na billiards, boxing, e-sports, football,  golf, mixed martial arts, motocross, jetski,  triathlon, volleyball at water sports.

“If all these professional sports can follow the law, bakit hindi yun ibang professional sports din,” aniya
