DA NANG, Vietnam — Ayaw ng Pilipinas na mawala ang pagkakaibigan nila ng China o makipagdigma dahil sa iringan sa teritoryo ngunit paprangkahin ang higante ng Asia na dapat nang magkasundo sa code of conduct sa West Philippine Sea (WPS) /South China Sea.
Sinabi ni Pangulong Rodrigo Duterte na ipaaabot niya ang mensaheng ito upang maibsan ang tensiyon sa pinagtatalunang karagatan sa pagkikita nila ni Chinese President Xi Jinping ngayong Sabado sa sidelines ng Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit dito.
Ang dalawang presidente ay kabilang sa 21 Pacific Rim leaders na dumadalo sa APEC summit sa Da Nang, Vietnam.

Nakatakda ang bilateral meeting nina Duterte at Trump ngayong Sabado bago magbalik ang Pangulo sa Pilipinas.
“I don’t want to lose friendship with China. China is a good friend. China was there when we needed most their help,” sabi ng Pangulo sa press conference matapos makipagkita sa Filipino community sa Da Nang nitong Huwebes ng gabi.
“China, who controls the passage, must come up with a code of conduct… In the bilateral, I would insist that we hurry up,” dagdag niya.
Bilang chairman ng Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) balak din ni Duterte na ipaabot kay Xi ang pangamba ng regional bloc sa malawakang military buildup sa pinagtatalunang teritoryo.
“It is not wrong for me to tell China. Look, you have -- You know, already placed the heavy artillery there. So it puts us in a wary, worried and wary because we are also using the passage,” aniya.
“Because we are friends, I’m ready to listen to China. I will tell him straight. ‘You know Mr. President the whole of the ASEAN is worried about how we should behave in the seas that are now militarized,” dagdag niya.
“The best way is to have a written code of conduct so you read it and you would know that you are crossing boundaries because as of now, it is now a contested claim,” aniya pa.
Isinantabi rin ni Duterte ang pakikipagdigma sa China, dahil hindi kaya ng bansa na gumamit ng puwersa o karahasan para pigilan ang China sa reclamation works nito. Nanindigan siya na mas nais niyang maayos ang gusot sa paraang mapayapa at naayon sa batas.
“I’m not interested to go to war with China. I’m interested in friendship,” ani Duterte. “But I have to ask him questions reflecting the sentiments of the ASEAN.”
