Isang Pilipino na namatay habang nagsisilbi bilang security officer sa United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission sa Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) ang kabilang sa mga UN personnel na namatay sa serbisyo mula Enero 1, 2015 hanggang Hunyo 30, 2016, na pinarangalan kamakailan ng UN.
Si Jacinto Bala, kasama ng 209 na UN personnel na namatay sa pagsusulong ng kapayapaan, ay pinarangalan sa isang mataimtim na seremonya sa Annual Memorial Service na ginanap sa Trusteeship Council Chamber ng UN Headquarters sa New York City.
Sinabi ni UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon sa seremonya na, “the men and women we recognize today came from all corners of the world.”
“They served in dangerous and difficult conditions,” ani Ban. “They were unwavering in their conviction that, by working together, we can teach a child, we can feed a family, we can heal a community, and we can move a country and our world a little closer to a better place. And it is that calling for which our colleagues made the ultimate sacrifice.”

Binanggit naman ni Vice-President of Staff Management Committee Ian Richards ang pangangailangan na mapabuti ang proteksyon sa staff at maging malinaw ang papel ng peacekeepers sa pagkakaloob ng seguridad sa UN staff.
Bukod kay Secretary-General Ban, nagbigay-pugay din sina UN General Assembly President Peter Thomson at UN Security Council President Vitaly Churkin sa pagsindi ng mga kandila para sa 210 sibilyan.
Ang Pilipinas ay aktibong nag-aambag sa UN peacekeeping operations simula 1963 at sumasabak sa 15 peacekeeping at special political missions. (ROY C. MABASA)
