Mariing inalmahan ni Sen. Rodante Marcoleta ang tungkol sa naging sarili niyang pahayag kaugnay sa pagmumungkahing “i-give up” ang Kalayaan Island Group (KIG) dahil hindi naman daw ito nasasakop ng Exclusive Economic Zone ng Pilipinas. ‘
Ayon kasi kay Marcoleta sa pagdinig ng Commision on Appointment (CA) noong Pebrero 4, 2026, kinuwestiyon niya ang nakahanda umanong pagsasakripisyo ng Pilipinas para sa KIG at sinabi niyang hindi naman daw ito sakop ng EEZ.
“Ano ba talaga ang ipagpapatayan natin dito? We will offer our lives, including the lives of our children, to die for it, for something that is not even on our EEZ?” pagsisimula niya.
Dagdag pa niya, “Ang gawin natin po, para madali, i-give up natin ‘yong KIG then mako-coordinate na natin lahat. But until and unless nandoon ‘yong KIG, nasa labas po ng ating Exclusive Economic Zone, papaano po malalagay sa entire West Philippine Sea?”

Kaugnay nito, naglabas naman ng screenshot ng karagdagang paliwanag ni Marcoleta ang mamamahayag na si Joseph Morong sa kaniyang social media accounts noong Biyernes, Pebrero 6, 2026.
Ani Marcoleta, hindi raw niya sinabing ipamigay ang KIG at nililihis lang umano ng ilang indibidwal ang kahulugan ng kaniyang naging unang pahayag.
“Hindi ko sinabi na ipamigay natin ang KIG. These people are deliberately abbreviating the context of what I actually discussed at the last CA hearing before the 35 members of the AFP who are to be confirmed on that day,” aniya.

Dagdag niya, “My detractors are implying that after my interpellation in the CA where 35 members of the AFP are to be confirmed.”
Pagpapatuloy ni Marcoleta, kailangan daw magbigay ng bansa ng mapa sa United Nation para mapasama ang WPS sa International Hydrographic Organization (IHO).
Ngunit hindi raw iyon magiging posible dahil maaaring lumabag ang Pilipinas sa United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) kaya niya nasabing “i-give up” ang KIG para raw matapos ang problema.
“I informed them that for the WPS to be listed in the IHO, we need to deposit maps to the UN to notify the world that we are usurping part of the high seas including the KIG to the WPS since the KIG lies beyond our EEZ,” saad niya.
“I said that is not possible because that will be violating the UNCLOS, unless of course we give up the KIG to solve the problem!” pagtatapos pa niya.
