Sinabi ni Vice President Sara Duterte na may tiwala siya kay Atty. Nicholas Kaufman, abogadong kumakatawan sa kaniyang ama at dating Pangulong Rodrigo Duterte, habang papalapit ang petsa ng pagdinig para sa kumpirmasyon ng mga kaso laban dito sa International Criminal Court (ICC).
Sa panayam ng media, tumanggi si VP Sara na magbigay ng karagdagang detalye kung paano hinahawakan ni Kaufman ang kaso.
Gayunpaman, sumagot siya ng oo nang tanungin kung may kumpiyansa siya sa paghahanda ng naturang abogado para sa pagdinig sa Setyembre, para sa confirmation of charges.
Aniya, si Kaufman daw ang pinili ng ama kaya susunod sila sa kagustuhan nito.

“Siya ang pinili ni dating pangulong Rodrigo Duterte na lawyer so we only follow kung ano yung choice ng client. Siya naman ang kliyente, sa kanila naman ang professional arrangement,” aniya.
“As long as nagsabi si dating pangulong Rodrigo Duterte na yan ang aking mga abugado, susunod kami and mag-cooperate kami kung anong kailangan ng legal team."
Matatandaang inaresto ang dating pangulo noong Marso 11 pagdating niya mula Hong Kong, sa kahilingan ng ICC bilang bahagi ng imbestigasyon nito sa kaniyang “war on drugs” na tumakda sa panahon ng kaniyang pagkapangulo.
Dinala siya sa The Hague sa Netherlands sa parehong araw ng kaniyang pagkakaaresto.
Noong Marso 14, humarap si Duterte sa mga hukom ng ICC sa pamamagitan ng video link. Nakatakda siyang dumalo sa pagdinig sa Setyembre 23 para kumpirmahin ang mga kaso laban sa kaniya.
Ayon sa kanyang depensa, hindi sila maghahain ng mga testigo sa nasabing pagdinig para sa kumpirmasyon ng mga kaso.
NICHOLAS KAUFMAN VERSUS HARRY ROQUE
Noong Hulyo ay naging usap-usapan naman ang tila patutsadahan nina Kaufman at dating presidential spokesperson Atty. Harry Roque, kaugnay pa rin sa kaso ni FPRRD.
Nagbigay ng payo si Kaufman kay Roque hinggil sa panghihimasok umano nito sa kaso.
“He could very well have jeopardized the Defence’s efforts to release the former President. He could very well have jeopardized the Defence’s efforts to release the former President,” ani Kaufman, sa written interview ng Facebook page na Alvin and Tourism, noong Hulyo 29, 2025.
Ayon pa kay Kaufman, isang Dutch lawyer ang nagkumpirma hinggil sa umano’y inisyatibo ni Roque na kasuhan daw ang Dutch government dahil sa pagkakakulong ni dating Pangulong Duterte.
“Dutch lawyer has confirmed to me that Harry Roque approached him with an initiative to sue the Dutch Government for facilitating the rendition of the former President,” ani Kaufman.
Bunsod nito, tinawag ni Kaufman na “crazy scheme” ang naturang umano'y plano ni Roque na makakagulo lang daw sa kaso ng dating Pangulo.
“In my opinion, this was a crazy scheme because the release of the former President would require the cooperation of the Dutch Government,” anang lead counsel.
Dagdag pa niya, “Something unlikely to be forthcoming if they are being sued by the person concerned.”
Bunsod nito, pinayuhan na lamang ni Kaufman na mas pagtuunan daw ni Roque ang inaasikaso nitong refugee status.
“Harry Roque would be best advised to channel the energy he has expended on meddling into defending his appeal against the denial of his supposed refugee status – a status which he would have been happy to jettison if someone would be prepared to employ him,” saad ni Roque.
KAUGNAY NA BALITA: Kaufman may payo sa pangingialam ni Roque
Agad naman itong sinagot ni Roque at sinabing hindi siya nangingialam sa kaso.
Sa kaniyang inilabas na pahayag sa kanilang opisyal na Facebook page noong Hulyo 30, 2025, iginiit niyang hindi umano maituturing na “crazy schemes” ang mga ginagawa niyang paraan para sa kaso ni dating Pangulong Duterte na minsan na rin daw nilang napag-usapan ni VP Sara.
Sa kaniyang pahayag, itinanggi ni Roque ang panghihimasok niya sa kaso, o nagbigay ng mga pahayag na maaaring makaapekto sa legal strategy ng defense team sa kaso. Kagaya rin ng iba pang mga tagasuporta ni FPRRD, hangad din niyang maiuwi sa Pilipinas ang dating pangulo.

May kontra pahayag din siya hinggil sa nabanggit na "crazy scheme" ni Kaufman.
Dagdag pa niya, "I cannot be blamed for devising remedies to bring former Presidente Duterte home alive. No such idea can be characterized as a crazy scheme."
"In fact, the Vice President acknowledged that we have discussed the domestic legal remedy in numerous occasions and I have deferred to VP’s decision to hold the domestic legal remedy in abeyance pending the outcome of the interim release," aniya pa.
