Isusulong ng Pilipinas ang pagtutulungan ng mga miyembro ng ASEAN at iba pang bansa sa Asia na nagtatanim ng palay upang maging sagana at abot-kaya ito sa buong rehiyon, sa harap ng mga hamon ng climate change.
Ipiprisinta ng International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) ang 10-point Action Plan sa mga pangunahing agriculture policymaker ng rehiyon sa taunang Senior Officials Meeting-ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Agriculture and Forestry (SOM-AMAF) conference sa Palawan sa Agosto 22-26.
Naaayon ang Action Plan sa ASEAN Integrated Food Security Framework at isinasama ang ASEAN Plus 3 Germplasm Development and Breeding Initiative.
Sa ilalim ng inisyatibo, magkakaroon ng technology collaboration platform sa rehiyon na magpapabuti sa genetic resources ng mga uri ng palay na matatagpuan sa mga bansa sa ASEAN Plus 3.
Pabibilisan din nito ang pagtutulungan sa pagdebelop at pagpapakalat ng climate-smart rice varieties na kayang mabuhay sa tagtuyot, baha at salinity na dala ng climate change.

“Now is the time for ASEAN to make this commitment,” sabi ni Matthew Morell, IRRI director general. “The rice industry feeds over 600 million people in the region each day. A joint investment in rice breeding can achieve food security for the entire region, as well as create inclusive economic growth in the rice industry.” (PNA)
