Nagbigay ng mensahe si Pope Leo XIV para sa Augustinian Community ng Minor Basilica of Santo Niño sa Cebu para sa pagdiriwang ng kapistahan ng santong patron.

Sa isang Facebook post ng Basilica Minore del Santo Niño de Cebu nitong Linggo, Enero 18, mababasa ang kabuuang mensahe ng Santo Papa.

“Guided by the theme of ‘In Santo Nino we are one,’ the Holy Father prays that this feast will once again be an opportunity to grow in appreciation of the sacramental grace of baptism that incorporates us into Christ, and thus makes us children of God and members of his Church,” saad ni Pope Leo XIV.

Dagdag pa niya, “It is, therefore, his hope that you will be inspired by a greater desire to embrace the baptismal call to live a grace-filled life in Christ and in service to your brothers and sisters, especially those on the margins of society, so that you will bear greater witness to Christ's call to unity and reflect the life of charity of the Most Holy Trinity (cf. Jn 17:21-23).”

Sa huli, iginawad ng Santo Papa sa mga nakiisa sa pagdiriwang ang kaniyang Apostolikong Pagpapala bilang tanda ng kagalakan at pag-asa sa Panginoon.

Ayon sa tala ng Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) Encyclopedia of Philippine Art, pinaniniwalaang ang imahen ng Sto. Niño de Cebu ay ang orihinal na bersyon ng santo na bitbit noon ng ekspedisyon ni Ferdinand Magellan noong 1521.

Kaya naman naging bahagi na ito bilang isa sa mga pinakamalaki at engrandeng kapistahan sa Pilipinas na idinaraos taon-taon.
