Hindi na gagamitin ng Pilipinas ang Mutual Defense Treaty (MDT) nito sa United States (US) laban sa China kasunod na rin ng insidente ng panunutok ng laser ng Chinese Coast Guard (CCG) sa BRP Malapascua ng Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) sa Ayungin Shoal kamakailan.
Ito ang binigyang-diin ni Pangulong Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. nang dumalo ito sa alumni homecoming ng Philippine Military Academy (PMA) sa Fort del Pilar sa Baguio City nitong Sabado, Pebrero 18.
"If we activate that (MDT), what we are doing is escalating, intensifying the tensions in the area (WPS). And I think that would be counterproductive," aniya.
"Besides, despite the fact that it was a military-grade laser that was pointed at our Coast Guard, I do not think that it is sufficient for it to trigger the Mutual Defense Treaty," sabi ni Marcos.

Nauna nang sinabi ng PCG na pansamantalang nabulag ang mga tauhan nito matapos tamaan ng military-grade laser ng CCG habang silay ay nagsasagawa ng resupply mission sa tropa ng gobyerno sa Ayungin Shoal nitong Pebrero 6.
Ipinagtanggol naman ng China ang CCG at sinabing ginawa lamang nito ang nararapat laban sa mga pumapasok sa karagatang sakop ng kanilang bansa.
Idinagdag naman ni Marcos, patuloy pa rin sa pakikipag-usap ang Pilipinas sa mga treaty partner nito, kabilang ang Estados Unidos sa gitna ng pagtangging gamitin ang MTD laban sa China.
"So, we are in constant contact, of course, with our treaty partners, not only with the United States but also our ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) partners and our partners here in Asia. That I think is the better recourse rather thango directlyto the Mutual Defense Treaty, which again I am very concerned would provoke the tensions rather than cool the tensions now," dagdag pa ni Marcos.
