Umaasa ang administrasyong Duterte na magkakaroon ng mas bukas na diyalogo at kooperasyon sa Simbahang Katoliko sa pagkakahalal ng bagong lider ng mga obispong Katoliko.

Ipinaabot ni Presidential Spokesman Ernesto Abella ang pagbati ng gobyerno kay Davao Archbishop Romulo Valles, bilang bagong pinuno ng Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippine (CBCP).

“The new Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) head from Davao signals a new day of peace for a multi-cultural Philippines,” ani Abella.

“Our warm congratulations to Archbishop Valles as he leads the Catholic faithful in the country, towards developing a deeper spiritual life and for the Church to have a more open dialogue and cooperation with the government, especially in working for the poor and the marginalized,” dagdag niya.

Papalitan ni Valles si Arcbishop Socrates Villegas ng Lingayen-Dagupan para pamunuan ang CBCP sa loob ng dalawang taon. Si Valles, tutuntong sa edad na 66 taon ngayong araw (Hulyo 10), ay naging vice president ng CBCP.

Binanggit ni Abella na si Valles ay nagsilbing pari sa Mindanao sa loob ng apat na dekada at makatutulong sa pagsusulong ng kapayapaan at kaunlaran sa rehiyon.

“His familiarity with Davao and Mindanao would augur well for the country as we promote interfaith dialogue and intercultural understanding as part of our efforts to rebuild Marawi and to transform Mindanao into a land of fulfillment,” aniya.

Magiging masugid din kayang kritiko ni Pangulong Rodrigo Duterte si Valles kahit na siya ay nagmula rin sa Davao?

“Let us wait and see rather than make conclusions now,” sinabi ni Manila Auxiliary Bishop Broderick Pabillo sa isang panayam.

Ayon naman kay Marbel Bishop Dinualdo Gutierrez, dapat magtiwala ang mamamayan kay Valles. “Trust him, trust God,” aniya.

Sinabi ni Balanga Bishop Ruperto Santos na dahil ang mga obispo ay tinawag bilang mga propeta, dapat silang magsalita para sa katotohanan “and show what truth is.”

“Thus be critical what is not true and condemn what is evil and wrong regardless blood relationship or regional affinity,” aniya.

Naniniwala rin siya na dahil si Valles ay nagmula sa Mindanao, mas maiintindihan siya ng mga tagaroon. “I think being from Mindanao, Abp Valles speaks, feels and acts best for them and they can relate to him, since he is one of them,” ani Santos.

Nahalal si Valles bilang pangulo ng CBCP kasama si Kalookan Bishop Pablo Virgilio David, bilang vice president, nitong Sabado, sa 115th Plenary Assembly ng mga obispo na ginaganap sa Manila. Papalitan niya si Villegas, na ang ikalawa at huling termino ay magtatapos sa Nobyembre 30, 2017.
