Sinayang ng Korte Suprema ang oportunidad para labanan ang lumalaganap na authoritarianism sa bansa nang katigan nito ang deklarasyon ng batas militar sa Mindanao.
Ayon kay Senator Risa Hontiveros, ang pagpabor ay nangyari kasabay ng pag-amin ng Solicitor General na walang pagkakaiba ang batas militar sa normal na panawagan sa militar.
“The decision sets a dangerous precedent for undemocratic governance. Lest we forget, bad precedents stem from seemingly justifiable measures. With the ruling, martial law becomes the ‘default response’ of the state to address all acts of violence and lawlessness. Martial law becomes a ‘silver bullet’ for a false peace. President Duterte must not see the decision as a free pass to expand martial law to other parts of the country or take constitutional shortcuts,” ani Hontiveros.

Pero, sa kabila nito ay sinabi ni Hontiveros na buo pa rin ang suporta niya sa paglaban sa mga terorista sa bansa.
Hinimok naman ni Senator Bam Aquino ang sambayanan na igalang ang desisyon ng Korte Suprema, pero dapat din daw na maging mapagmatyag at bantayan ang karapatan ng mga mamamayan.
Aniya, ang pagsupil sa mga terorista ay hindi sapat, dapat ding supilin ang kahirapan na siyang susi sa terorismo at insureksiyon sa bansa.
“The Supreme Court magistrates showed judicial probity, independence and progressive thinking in their exercise of judicial review powers. It is a mark of a progressive Supreme Court when they listen to the Executive’s justifications of the Martial Law declaration and place the welfare of the people of Mindanao above other considerations,” ayon naman kay Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri.
