Kumpiyansa ang Malacañang na kapag naisabatas na ang panukalang Rice Tarrification ay matitiyak na ang tuluy-tuloy at sapat na supply at mababang presyo ng bigas, at maiiwasan na rin ang cartel sa industriya.

Ito ang sinabi ni Presidential Spokesman Salvador Panelo makaraang pasalamatan ang Senado sa pagpapasa sa panukalang prioridad ng gobyerno, na layuning palitan ng sistema ng taripa ang mga limitasyon sa pag-aangkat ng bigas.

“The Palace expresses its gratitude to the Senate for passing on third and final reading the Rice Tariffication Bill,” saad sa pahayag ni Panelo.

“The President has certified the aforesaid bill as urgent. In his communication with the leadership of the Senate, the President expressed the urgent need to improve the availability of rice in the country to prevent artificial rice shortage, reduce the prices of rice in the market, and curtail the prevalence of corruption and cartel domination in the rice industry,” dagdag niya.

Miyerkules ng gabi nang aprubahan ng Senado, sa botong 14-0, ang Senate Bill No. 1998, o An Act Replacing The Quantitative Import Restrictions On Rice With Tariffs, Lifting The Quantitative Export Restrictions On Rice, And Creating The Rice Competitiveness Enhancement Fund.

Una nang inaprubahan ng Kamara noong Agosto ang sariling bersiyon nito ng nasabing panukala.
