Sa kabila ng pinag-isang panawagan ng mga hukom at mga empleyado ng korte na magbitiw na siya sa tungkulin, mariing sinabi ni Supreme Court (SC) Chief Justice-on leave Maria Lourdes Sereno: “I will not resign.”
Sinabi ni Sereno na bagamat mas madaling opsiyon ang pagbibitiw sa tungkulin, binigyang-diin niya na tungkuling niyang gawin ang “right thing” at hanggang sa huli ay depensahan ang sarili sa reklamong impeachment laban sa kanya.
Ang panawagan na magbitiw na sa tungkulin si Sereno ay inihayag kahapon ng umaga sa flag-raising ceremony sa Korte Suprema, na karamihan sa dumalo ay nagsuot ng pulang damit upang igiit ang kanilang apela.

Binasa ni Erwin Ocson, presidente ng SC Employees Association (SCEA), ang nasabing pahayag sa ngalan ng mga pinuno ng Philippine Judges Association (PJA), SC Assembly of Lawyer Employees (SCALE), Philippine Association of Court Employees (PACE), at Sandiganbayan Employees Association (SEA).
“The pending impeachment proceedings in recent months have put the entire judiciary in disrepute, thereby affecting the honor and integrity of its justices, judges, officials, and employees…. We call on you, for the sake of our people, to step down from your position as chief justice,” bahagi ng pahayag na binasa ni Ocson.
SA PULA, SA PUTI
Kasabay nito, nagsagawa naman ng protesta sa labas ng SC ang mga empleyado ng korte na sumusuporta kay Sereno, at nagsipagsuot naman sila ng puting damit.
Mariing kinondena ng grupong Coalition for Justice ang umano’y pagmamanipula nI Pangulong Rodrigo Duterte sa tangkang pagpapatanggal kay Sereno sa puwesto.
Malaki ang paniniwala ng grupo na may kinalaman ang Pangulo sa panawagang resign, lalo na dahil si Solicitor General Jose Calida, na pangunahing abogado ng pamahalaan, ang naghain ng quo warranto petition laban kay Sereno sa SC.
‘FIGHT TO THE END’
Samantala, sa kanyang speech sa University of the Philippines-Diliman kasunod ng flag-raising ceremony sa Korte Suprema, sinabi ni Sereno na maninindigan siya sa pakikipaglaban para sa “judicial independence” at kontra sa extralegal adventurism “the seeks to bend the rules when convenient.”
“Allowing the weight of the office of the Chief Justice to be immediately lifted off my shoulders, freeing me to pursue many things ordinary citizens do. It will end the unrelenting attacks against my person, my staff, and other court officials.
“But I do not make choices in life on the basis of what is the easier option; but what is the right thing to do. And without the slightest doubt, the right thing to do is to fight this impeachment to the end.”
Bukod sa mga impeachment complaint na kinahaharap sa House committee on justice sa Kamara, na bumoto na sa pagtukoy ng probable cause sa kaso, nahaharap din si Sereno sa quo warranto case, na inihain ni SolGen Calida sa SC dahil sa kabiguan niya umanong magsumite ng 10 statements of assets, liabilities and networth (SALNs).
Ang kasong impeachment ni Sereno ay para sa culpable violation of the Constitution, kurapsiyon, at betrayal of public trust—na pawang itinanggi niya.
HAYAANG LITISIN SA SENADO
Kaugnay nito, naniniwala naman si Senador Panfilo Lacson na sa korte dapat magwakas ang usapin kay Sereno.
“Every person is entitled to his or her day in court. It’s as simple as that, and Chief Justice Sereno is not an exception,” komento ni Lacson, kaugnay ng panibagong panawagan na magbitiw na sa tungkulin ang Punong Mahistrado.
Inaasahang aaprubahan sa plenaryo ang rekomendasyon ng House justice committee sa impeachment complaint laban kay Sereno, at pagkatapos ay isusumite na sa Senado para sa paglilitis.
Sinabi ni Lacson na hindi na siya magkokomento pa sa kaso ni Sereno dahil kabilang din siya sa magiging senator-judge.
