Popondohan ng United States Agency for International Development (USAID) ang US$24.5 million (P1.2 bilyon) na proyekto upang matugunan ang pagkaubos ng biodiversity at illegal wildlife trade sa tatlong lugar sa Pilipinas.
Tinatawag na “Protect Wildlife,” pagtutuunan ng limang taong proyekto ang pagpapabuti sa pagkain, tubig, kabuhayan at ecotourism na makukuha mula sa mga kapaligirang ito.
“The project will demonstrate that protecting and managing the Philippines’ diverse habitats and species lead to improved quality of life and community-level, sustainable development,” sabi ni US Ambassador to the Philippines Sung Kim sa paglulunsad ng proyekto nitong Lunes.
Magkakaloob ang proyekto ng technical assistance sa mga katuwang nito sa gobyerno at civil society, partnership para sa conservation financing, behavior change campaign at social marketing, science and technology, at pagpapatupad ng mga batas sa kapaligiran.

Sisimulan ito sa Palawan, Zamboanga City at Tawi-tawi, na may pinakamaraming habitat at tahanan ng mga natatanging species sa bansa.
Ang mga lalawigang ito ay lantad din sa mga bantang dulot ng tao gaya ng pagnanakaw at pagpupuslit ng mga hayop, mapanirang paraan ng pangingisda, at pagkaubos ng habitat dahil sa malawakang conversion ng mga kagubatan, latian, at bakawan upang maging tirahan at sakahan.
“With the Philippines being both one of the world’s megadiverse countries and critical biodiversity hotspot, we need to see how we can communicate development programs more effectively so that people will appreciate better the benefits of conservation,” sabi ni Department of Environment and Natural Resources’ (DENR) Biodiversity Management Bureau (BMB) Director Theresa Mundita Lim.
