Binira ng Department of Foreign Affairs kahapon ang komento ng isang United Nations envoy laban sa Pilipinas sa paglabag sa mga karapatang pantao sa kampanya kontra droga ni Pangulong Rodrigo Duterte, kasunod ng hatol sa mga lider ng Khmer Rouge dahil sa mga krimen laban sa sangkatauhan at genocide.
Sa isang pahayag, inilarawan ng DFA ang komento ni UN Special Expert on UN Assistance to the Khmer Rouge Trials David Scheffer na “irresponsible and alarming since these are directed at the leadership of a democratic country with a functioning criminal justice system fully committed to respect human rights.”
“As such, his remarks are unjustified and without basis,” ayon dito.
Unang sinabi ni Scheffer na dapat tandaan ng mga lider ng mundo na lumalabag sa human rights ang pagbasura ng korte sa apela laban sa habambuhay na pagkakabilanggo ni Nuon Chea, dating Deputy Secretary ng Communist Party of Kampuchea, at Khieu Samphan, dating Head of State of Democratic Kampuchea.

Ang dalawa ay matataas na lider ng rehimen na responsable sa pagkamatay ng dalawang milyong Cambodian mula 1975-1979.
Ayon kay Scheffer, ang desisyon ng korte laban kina Chea at Samphan ay dapat na magsilbing babala sa mga lider mula sa Pilipinas, South Sudan, Sudan, Central African Republic, Syria, North Korea at sa grupong Islamic State group.
“The Filipino people continue to enjoy their fundamental rights and freedoms,” supalpal ng DFA sa mga ipinahayag ni Scheffer. “The Government’s campaign against crime and corruption is being waged precisely for the protection of its people and the continued enjoyment of their right to peace, security and fundamental freedoms.” (Roy C.
