IBINIGAY ng Department of Education ang kanilang suporta sa idaraos na 19th ASEAN Age Group Chess Championships sa darating na Hunyo 18-28 sa Davao City matapos pahintulutan ang mga mag-aaral na kalahok na lumiban muna sa kanilang klase na nagsimula na nitong Hunyo 4.

Sa isang memorandum na ipinadala sa lahat ng mga regional directors at sports officers, sinabi ni DepEd Undersecretary Tonisito Umali na lahat ng kalahok sa 11-day tournament ay kailangan nilang asistihan at payagang magkaroon ng special classes.

“We wish to inform you that this office fully supports the invitation to participate in this international competition,” nakasaad sa liham na pinadala ni Umali.

“While we can not disrupt classes, we will allow students who shall participate in this activiaty remedial classes or be provided with modules for them to learn and compensate absences during the competition period,” dagdag nito.

Ikinatuwa naman ni James Infiestio, vice president ng organizer na Chess Events International, ang nasabing development.

“We thank the DepEd for fully supporting the tournament and this should help our chess players to focus more on their training and preparation in their quest to make our country proud,” wika ni Infiesto.

Ang event na sanctioned ng NCFP na pinamumunuan ni Butch Pichay at itinataguyod ng Davao City sa pamumuno ni Mayor Sara Duterte at suportado ng Philippine Sports Commission ay bukas sa mga woodpushers na 20 anyos pababa mula sa Pilipinas at iba pang mga bansa sa Southeast Asia kabilang ang powerhouse Vietnam at mga kalahok mula Asia-Pacific.

Nakataya sa torneo ang FIDE at International Master titles at ang tsansang maging kinatawan ng bansa sa Asian Age Group Championships.

Pangungunahan ni FIDE Master-elect Daniel Quizon, 14-anyos ang kampanya ng bansa sa nabanggit na torneo.
