Si Pangulong Duterte ang pangunahing protektor ng mga batas sa Pilipinas, hindi ng mga drug lord, gaya ng ipinaparatang ni Sen. Leila de Lima, sinabi ng Malacañang kahapon.
“I do not think and I do not believe and it has not crossed my mind that the President is what he is as you said,” sagot ni Presidential Communications Secretary Martin Andanar nang kapanayamin sa radyo tungkol sa sinabi ng senadora.
“The President is the President of the land and he is the number one protector of our laws in the land,” sambit ni Andanar.

Inamin kamakailan ni Duterte na siya ang nag-utos na ibalik sa puwesto ang isang police official na isinangkot sa ilegal na droga, sinabing ito ay upang manmanan ang bawat galaw nito.
Ayon kay Duterte, siya mismo at hindi ang kanyang assistant na si Christopher “Bong” Go, ang nag-utos kay Philippine National Police chief Director General Ronald dela Rosa na ibalik sa tungkulin si Supt. Marvin Marcos bilang hepe ng Criminal Investigation and Detection Group-Region 8.
Dahil dito, sinabi ni De Lima na posibleng si Duterte ang nangungunang drug lord coddler sa Pilipinas.
“We must start asking ourselves this question: whether or not the President, rather than De Lima, is actually the number one drug lord protector and coddler in the country,” pahayag ni De Lima noong nakaraang linggo.
