Sinabi ni Pangulong Rodrigo Duterte na hindi pa niya tinatanggap ang imbitasyon ni US President Donald Trump na bumisita sa White House dahil sa abala pa siya sa ibang gawain.
“I’m tied up. I cannot make any definite promise. I’m supposed to go to Russia, I’m supposed to go to Israel,” pahayag ni Duterte sa ambush interview sa Davao City kahapon.
Nilinaw ng Pangulo na hindi niya inilalayo ang Pilipinas sa United States. “Nothing of the sort, actually. It was not a distancing, but it was rather a rift between me maybe and the State Department and Mr. [Barack] Obama who spoke openly against me,” aniya.

Ang tinutukoy ni Duterte ay ang pagbatikos noon ni Obama sa kanyang kampanya kontra droga. “Things have changed--there’s a new leadership,” aniya pa.
Inimbitahan ni Trump si Duterte na bumisita sa White House nang mag-usap sila sa telepono nitong Sabado ng gabi, pagkatapos ng 30th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit.
Sinabi ni Presidential Spokesperson Ernesto Abella, sa isang mensahe sa text, na hindi pa sumasagot ng “yes” si Duterte sa imbitasyon ni Trump ngunit nais itong tanggapin.
“Let us just say, he [is inclined] to appreciate the gesture. His response remains to be seen,” ani Abella.
BINATIKOS, DINEPENSAHAN
Samantala, ipinagtanggol ng White House nitong Linggo ang desisyon ni Trump na imbitahan si Duterte sa Washington kahit na nahaharap ang administrasyon nito sa mga batikos sa extrajudicial killings ng mga suspek sa droga sa Pilipinas, iginiit na kailangan ang tulong niya para malabanan ang North Korea.
“There is nothing right now facing this country and facing the region that is a bigger threat than what’s happening in North Korea,” sinabi ni White House chief of staff Reince Priebus sa “This Week” ng ABC.
Hinihiling ni Trump ang suporta ng Southeast Asia para tumulong na marendahan ang nuclear at missile program ng North Korea.
Iginiit ni Priebus na ang pag-imbita kay Duterte “doesn’t mean that human rights don’t matter, but what it does mean is that the issues facing us developing out of North Korea are so serious that we need cooperation at some level with as many partners in the area as we can get to make sure we have our ducks in a row.”
Binatikos ni John Sifton, Asia director ng Human Rights Watch, ang imbitasyon ni Trump kay Duterte.
“Celebrating a man who boasts of killing his own citizens and inviting him to the White House, while remaining silent on his disgusting human rights record, sends a terrifying message,” aniya.
“By effectively endorsing Duterte’s murderous ‘war on drugs’, Trump has made himself morally complicit in future killings,” dagdag niya.
Gayunman, idiniin ng isang opisyal ng adminitrasyon ni Trump na ang imbitasyon ay hindi reward kay Duterte o endorsement sa kanyang mga polisiya kundi nakaangkla sa desisyon na mapabuti ang relasyon sa Pilipinas, na mahalaga at matagal nang kaalyado ng Amerika.
“It’s not a ‘thank you’,” sabi ng opisyal, na tumangging pangalanan. “It’s a meeting.”
Itinanggi din ng opisyal ang ulat ng New York Times na sinabi ng ilang opisyal ng administrasyon na nagulat ang State Department at ang National Security Council sa imbitasyon ni Trump kay Duterte at inaasahang kokontrahin ito.
