Kasabay ng pag-obserba sa World Day Against Death Penalty, umapela ang simbahang Katoliko kay Pangulong Rodrigo Duterte na huwag isipin ang ‘quick fix’ o madaliang solusyon sa problema ng kriminalidad sa bansa.
Binigyang diin ng Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines Épiscopal Commission on Prison Pastoral Care na hindi sagot ang kamatayan sa problema.
“We appeal to the President and our lawmakers not to resort to a quick fix solution to the problem of criminality and stop giving us false hope that we will be safe and secure by putting people to death,” ayon kay Rodolfo Diamante, executive secretary ng CBCP-ECPPC.
Maging ang Coalition Against Death Penalty ay nanawagan din sa Pangulo at mga mambabatas na iwaksi ang panukalang death penalty, sa halip ay ireporma na lang ang justice system na panawagan ni Pope Francis.

Hinggil sa summary executions, nakukulangan ang mga Obispo sa Negros sa aksyon ng pamahalaang Duterte.
Sa ipinalabas na joint pastoral statement, nagpahayag ng kalungkutan ang mga Obispo ng mga dioceses ng Bacolod, Dumaguete, San Carlos, at Kabankalan sa dumaraming bilang ng mga biktima ng summary executions.
“While we commend the government for its political will and determination in addressing the terrible drug menace that has long plagued our country, we strongly urge that this be done within the bounds of law and with full respect for human rights,” ayon sa mga Obispo sa naturang pastoral statement.
