Tinanggap ni Supreme Court (SC) Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno ang paghingi ng paumanhin sa kanya ni Pangulong Rodrigo Duterte na binatikos siya kaugnay ng pagpapangalan nito sa ilang hukom na umano’y sangkot sa droga.
Humarap kahapon si SC Spokesperson Theodore Te sa mga mamamahayag upang ihayag ang mensahe ni Sereno kaugnay ng pagso-sorry ng Presidente.
“The Chief Justice appreciates the president’s latest remarks,” pagbasa ni Te sa pahayag ni Sereno. “As previously announced, she will no longer say anything on the matter.”
Sa kanyang press conference sa Davao City nitong Huwebes ng gabi, sinabi ni Duterte na siya “would apologize to the Chief Justice for the harsh words, which was never intended.”

“Because of the magnitude of the problem, it was my way of solving the problem within the ambit of my powers as president,” ani Pangulong Duterte, kaugnay ng pagpapangalan niya sa pitong hukom na umano’y sangkot sa droga.
Dahil dito, lumiham si Sereno sa Pangulo nitong Lunes at hiniling na bigyan ang Korte Suprema ng “chance to administer the appropriate preventive measures without the complications of a premature public announcement.”
Gayunman, hindi ito nagustuhan ng Presidente at sinabihan si Sereno na huwag siyang utusan at kung hindi ay magdedeklara siya ng batas militar upang resolbahin ang problema ng bansa.
Kasunod ng paghingi ng paumanhin kay Sereno, itinuon naman ni Pangulong Duterte ang kanyang galit sa isang babaeng opisyal ng gobyerno, na matinding kritiko ng gobyerno.
Hindi niya pinangalanan ang opisyal, pero sinabi niya na siya “[will] destroy her in public” sa lalong madaling panahon.
“You know I was the whipping boy of the NGOs and the human rights stalwarts. But you know I have a very special ano kay ano,” ani Duterte.
“She is a government official. One day soon, bitiwan ko iyan in public and I will have to destroy her in public,” dagdag pa niya. “That’s the riddle there. Hintay lang kayo.” (Jeffrey Damicog at Genalyn Kabiling)
