Inatasan ng Korte Suprema ang Commission on Elections (Comelec) na magsumite ng komento sa loob ng 10-araw sa petisyon na humihiling na palawigin ang voters’ registration period para sa 2016 elections na nagtapos noong Oktubre 31.

Sinabi ni Atty. Theodore O. Te, tagapagsalita ng Supreme Court (SC), na inaksiyunan na ng kataas-taasang hukuman ang petisyon na inihain ng Kabataan Party-list at iba pang youth organization.

“The Court directed respondent Comelec to comment on the petition for certiorari and mandamus with application for preliminary mandatory injunction and/or temporary restraining order within a non-extendible period of 10 days from notice of resolution,” saad sa SC resolution, ayon kay Te.

Noong Oktubre 29, naghain ng petisyon ang Kabataan Party-list at iba pang organisasyon ng kabataan na humihiling sa Korte Suprema na palawigin ng voters’ registration period hanggang Enero 8, 2016.

Nakasaad sa petisyon na sa ilalim ng Section 8 ng Voters’ Registration Act:

“The personal filing of application of registration of voters shall be conducted daily in the office of the Election Officer during regular office hours; but no registration shall, however, be conducted during the period starting one hundred twenty days before a regular election and ninety days before a special election.”

“Despite this provision, Comelec has illegally set the deadline of the voter’s registration on Oct. 31, 2015, pursuant to Resolution No. 9853 and Resolution No. 9981,” iginiit sa petisyon. (Rey G. Panaligan)
