Naging emosyonal si Bureau of Customs (BOC) Commissioner Nicanor Faeldon kahapon nang manindigan siya sa harap ng mga senador na ginawa niya ang lahat ng kanyang makakaya upang matuldukan ang “tara” system, o ang pagbibigay ng suhol sa mga opisyal ng kawanihan para sa mabilisang paglalabas ng mga kargamento ng mga ito.
Ito ang ipinagdiinan ni Faeldon matapos siyang puwersahing sumagot sa tanong ni Senator Antonio Trillanes IV, dati niyang kasamahan sa Magdalo Group, kung mayroon ba o walang kurapsiyon sa BoC.
Muling humarap sa pagdinig ng Senate Blue Ribbon Committee sa P6.4-bilyon shabu shipment mula sa China, sa una ay tumanggi ang BoC chief na sagutin ang tanong ni Trillanes hanggang sa mamagitan na sa kanila si Sen. Richard Gordon, chairman ng komite.

Nagbanta si Gordon na mapipilitan siyang tanggapin ang mosyon upang i-cite for contempt si Faeldon kung hindi nito sasagutin ang “simple question” ni Trillanes.
Nang sumagot, sinabi ni Faeldon na siya “[would not] allow anybody to propound lies on innocent people while this investigation is ongoing.”
Napaiyak nang lapitan at kausapin ni Gordon, kalaunan ay inamin ni Faeldon na alam niya ang tungkol sa tara system pero naisin man niyang sugpuin ito, pakiramdam niya siya ay “alone in the fight.”
“Admittedly I failed to investigate it because I cannot do it alone. I was the only one appointed up to late last year. The people I have worked with there are the people I suspect doing the tara, 12,000 po sila (importers),” sabi ni Faeldon. “Nakikiusap ako, please go to my office and tell me who are these people asking for tara. Until today, none of the 12,000 importers have come up with a name of any official of the bureau.”
Kaugnay nito, hindi pa nakapagpapasya si Pangulong Duterte tungkol sa magiging kapalaran ni Faeldon sa harap ng apela ng ilang mambabatas na sibakin na sa puwesto ang BoC chief.
“The Dangerous Drugs Board Committee of House of Representatives wants the BoC chief fired for alleged gross incompetence and corruption,” sabi ni Presidential Spokesman Ernesto Abella. “From the Palace, the President said he will wait for the reports of both chambers of Congress before deciding how to best address issues in the Bureau of Customs. We note that the statement of the House Dangerous Drugs Committee and chair and we await other reports.”
