Idinepensa ni Justice Secretary Leila de Lima si Olongapo City Prosecutor Emilie Fe de los Santos laban sa alegasyon na kinikilingan nito si US Marine Pfc. Joseph Scott Pemberton, ang pangunahing suspek sa pagpatay sa transgender na si Jeffrey “Jennifer” Laude.
Sa panayam ng media, sinabi ni De Lima na si De los Santos ay isa sa mga magaling na prosecutor mula sa hanay ng National Prosecution Service (NPS).
Si De Los Santos ay inakusahan ng pamilya Laude na tumatayong abogado ni Pemberton sa isinasagawang preliminary hearing sa kaso.
“I’m asking City Prosecutor delos Santos to submit a comment on that before I make a decision pero hindi ganun kadali magpapalit ng handling prosecutor. Kilala ko ‘yan si City Prosecutor (De Los Santos), isa sa pinakamagaling namin na prosecutor,” pahayag ni De Lima.

Ani De Lima, nararapat na may sapat na batayan upang palitan si De Los Santos bilang chief prosecutor at kailangan ding kunin ang panig ng kontrobersiyal na prosecutor.
Una nang hiniling ng pamilya Laude kay De Lima na palitan si De Los Santos dahil sa pagtanggi nito na makibahagi ang mga private prosecutor sa pangunguna ni Harry Roque sa case conference.
“First of all, as far as we know, we have the right under the Constitution to choose our own lawyer in whatever cases we face. This is why we don’t understand why the current public prosecutor does not allow our lawyer to defend us and make sure justice for the killing of Jennifer Laude would be served,” nakasaad sa liham ng pamilya Laude kay De Lima.
“The trial has started, but we are deeply concerned. We will only feel secured once we see our lawyer working well with the public prosecutors in defending our real interests to attain justice,” dagdag nila.
Sinabi rin ni Roque na si De Los Santos ang nagsusulong ng plea bargain ni Pemberton at pagpapalutang sa P21 milyong areglo sa pamilya.
