NAIS ng Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU) sa Batac City na kilalanin ng Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA), upang bumuo ng Special Economic Zone (SEZ) initiatives sa Ilocos region.

Sa isang forum sa economic competitiveness planning, sinabi ni Dr. Carmelo Esteban, focal person ng MMSU PEZA Technical Working Group (TWG) at kasalukuyang direktor ng unibersidad, na kapag natamo ng MMSU ang pagkilala, ito ay kasunod ng Batangas State University, na tinukoy na ng ahensiya upang magkaroon ng sariling SEZ.

Ang SEZ o ecozone ay piling lugar na may maunlad o potensiyal na maging sentro ng pag-unlad sa agro-industrial, industrial, tourist/recreational, at commercial sectors, gayundin sa banking, investment, at financial centers.

Ayon kay Esteban, ipinanukala ang tatlong ecozone initiatives ng MMSU – ang transformation ng MMSU College of Aquatic Science and Applied Technology (CASAT) sa bayan ng Currimao bilang aquamarine zone; ang conversion ng forest reserve plantations ng unibersidad sa Barangay Payao, Batac, bilang agroforestry zone; at ang pagbuo ng Knowledge, Innovation, Science and Technology (KIST) Park sa loob ng university main campus.

“The TWG on investments of the regional development council will assess the potentials of this proposal, and we will be seeking the endorsement from PEZA,” aniya.

Idinagdag ni Esteban na karagdagang pagkakakilanlan sa kahit anong institusyon ang SEZ dahil sa tulong ng PEZA sa pagbuo ng samahan sa mga mamumuhunan sa pag-unlad ng ecozones.

Bago isinumite ang panukala, ipinakita ng MMSU sa ahensiya na handa silang maglingkod bilang program-delivery partner ng PEZA sa pagbuo ng SEZ.

Tiniyak ni MMSU President Shirley Agrupis na bubuo ang unibersidad ng sariling ecozones.

“Our campus in Currimao was envisioned to become an eco-fishery tourism hub, while the area in Barangay Payao has very rich forest resources, aside from the university being the host of several research and development centers,” ayon kay Agrupis.
