NAGTIPON ang mga lider mula sa iba’t ibang samahan at relihiyon nitong Lunes sa Archbishop’s Residence sa lungsod ng Cebu upang mag-alay ng inter-faith prayer para sa malinis at mapayapang halalan.

Sa isang pahayag, binigyang-diin ni Cebu Archbishop Jose S. Palma ang halaga ng panalangin na hindi mabahiran ng impluwensiya ng salapi o takot ang nakatakdang halalan sa Lunes.

Pinangunahan ni Palma ang iba pang mga lider ng iba’t ibang relihiyon sa isang seremonyal na pagsisindi ng kandila sa ginanap na Inter-Faith Convergence for Peace in Our Elections sa Filipiniana Hall sa nasabing lungsod.

Sinamahan siya nina Ustadz Najeeb Razul, ang mufti at eksperto sa Islam sa Central Visayas, Rev. Steve Berdin, pastor ng United Church of Christ in the Philippines, Ted Segura ng Focolare Movement, Diosdado Bestria Jr. ng United Methodist Church, Susan Lazaga ng Latter Day Saints, Nurdin Basang ng Cebuano Tausug group, Salim Daham ng Islamic Propagation Society of Cebu, at iba pang mga Katolikong pari at madre.

“We realize how important this election is, with hope that we make the people aware that every vote is sacred, every vote should be counted, and every vote should be done prayerfully and courageously and not to be influenced by any factor like money or fear,” ani Palma.

Ayon sa pinuno ng Roman Catholic Church sa Cebu, hindi lamang para sa nalalapit na halalan ang inter-faith dialogue ngunit hangad din nito na isaisip ng mga Pilipino ang tungkulin nito na tiyaking ang tatlong sangay ng pamahalaan—ang ehekutibo, lehislatibo at hudikatura, ay gumaganap ayon sa kanilang tungkulin.

“Our prayer is that whoever comes out of this (election) really reflects the peoples’ choice in the light of their faith and discernment of the people,” aniya.

Nabanggit naman ni Rev. Berdin ang tatlong mahalagang katangian na dapat taglayin ng isang kandidato—ang integridad, katalinuhan at enerhiya—na maaaring magamit ng mga botante sa pagpili ng mga kandidatong kanilang ihahalal.

“We have seen how candidates are made up to show that they are advocates of this and that but the truth is they are using such issues to further their interest and garner votes,” saad ni Berdin.

Ayon naman kay Razul, na eksperto sa batas ng Islam at mufti sa rehiyon, ang paglahok ng mga Muslim sa Cebu para sa inter-faith service, ay para sa pag-asang “to awaken the people and to rekindle the spirit of unity among us.”

“We have to inform them about what is happening in our society and the ongoing political exercise and implications of this to the individuals or collectively. We have to decide. We have to be very meticulous. We have to be very pragmatic in choosing (leaders),” ani Razul.

Sa isang joint prayer, nanawagan ang mga lider ng relihiyon sa mga botante “to make conscientious choices that reflect our faith in God, our values and our collective hopes and dreams.”

“In the remaining days leading up to May 13, let us be one in prayer for clarity and enlightenment of conscience. We encourage our communities and congregations to take a prayerful pause and form circles of discernment among families, neighbors, friends, and colleagues,” anila. “Let us take our faith and citizenship beyond May 13… This is an everyday act.”
