Sa gitna ng pangamba ng mga manggagawa ng business process outsourcing (BPO) companies sa Cebu City na hindi makaboto sa itinakdang araw ng eleksyon, suportado ni presidential aspirant Vice President Leni Robredo ang panawagan sa Commission on Elections (Comelec) na magbukas ng mga voting center para sa mga BPO employees.

Sinabi ni Robredo na nakipagtulungan na siya kay dating Cebu City Mayor Tommy Osmeña sa pagpetisyon sa poll body na magbukas ng mga voting center para sa BPO employees na maaaring hindi makaboto sa May 2022 national elections dahil sa kanilang "nature of work."

“We decided I will write Comelec and ask Comelec to open voting centers for BPO, BPO employees in Cebu,” ani Robredo sa isinagawang IT-BPO meeting sa Cebu City nitong Lunes, Disyembre 13.

“But as Mayor Tommy said earlier, the main purpose of the petition..is to make sure that our BPO employees are not disenfranchised because they might not be able to vote because of the nature of their work,” dagdag pa niya.

Bagama't kinakailangan ng mga employer na magbigay ng panahon para sa kanilang mga empleyado na bumoto sa Mayo 9, 2022, sinusunod ng mga BPO companies ang mga holiday at iskedyul ng kanilang mga dayuhang kliyente.

Halos lahat sa kanila ay nagtatrabaho ng night shift kaya mahirarapan silang gumising sa oras ng eleksyon, ayon kay Robredo.

Ang voting hours ay itinakda ng Comelec simula 6:00 ng umaga hanggang 7:00 ng gabi.

Idinagdag pa ni Robredo na natukoy na nila ang tatlong lugar sa lungsod na mangangailangan ng hiwalay na voting centers upang matugunan ang BPO employees na aabot sa humigit-kumulang 200,000.  Ito ang Cebu Business Park, Cebu Asiatown IT Part, at ang Cebu Business Park sa Bgy. Kasambagan.

Ayon sa Bise Presidente, ito ang problemang kinakaharap ng BPO industry na mayroong 1.2 milyon na Pilipinong manggagawa.

“We’re asking Comelec to number one, open voting centers but the long term one is to amend an Executive Order, where certain segment in society are allowed to do absentee voting,” ani Robredo na sinasabi na ang mga overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), uniformed personnel, at iba pang government officials ay may ganitong pribilehiyo. 

"We do understand that even BPO employees, not just even—not just BPO employees, but all Filipinos who do the same kind of work that BPO people do will benefit from the amendment of the Executive Order which will include them in the categorization that they should also be entitled to absentee voting privileges,” dagdag pa ng bise presidente.
