Naglabas ng pahayag si Sen. Risa Hontiveros kaugnay sa “due process” at “presumption of innocence.”

Sa latest Facebook post ni Hontiveros nitong Biyernes, Agosto 7, sinabi niyang hindi raw siya kontra sa mga paalala tungkol sa “due process” at “presumption of innocence” na ipinaglalaban na niya simula pa nang manungkulan siya. 

Ngunit kailangan umanong linawin ang kahulugan ng “due process.”

Aniya, “Due process does not mean that serious accusations cannot be spoken about. It does not mean that testimony given under oath must be ignored.”

“And it certainly does not mean that a person facing criminal charges has a right to avoid the courts where those charges must be answered,” dugtong pa ni Hontiveros.

Bukod dito, ipinaliwanag din ni Hontiveros ang ibig sabihin ng “presumption of innocence.”

Ito ay matapos niyang ilahad ang nasaksihan niya nang minsan siyang umupo bilang chair sa isang imbestigasyon sa Senado kung saan dumulog ang kababaihan upang ibahagi ang kuwento ng pananamantala at pang-aabusong naranasan ng mga ito.

“I listened to their testimony. I heard their accounts of exploitation and abuse. I cannot unhear them, and I will not pretend that their testimony does not exist simply because the accused enjoys the presumption of innocence,” saad ni Hontiveros.

Dagdag pa niya, "The presumption of innocence is fundamental. But it protects an accused from being convicted without proof. It does not require us to presume that the women who testified are lying.”

Sa huli, tiniyak ng senadora na poprotektahan niya ang constitutional rights ng isang akusado habang patas na ipinagtatanggol ang karapatan ng kababaihang naglakas-loob na maghanap ng hustisya.

Matatandaang si Hontiveros ang nagsilbing chairperson ng Senate Committee on Women, Children, Family Relations and Gender Equality kaugnay sa imbestigasyon ng kaso ni  Kingdom of Jesus Christ (KOJC) founder Pastor Apollo Quiboloy.

Umapela na kamakailan ang Amerika sa Pilipinas na ipaubaya na sa kanilang kustodiya si Quiboloy para litisin sa kasong sex trafficking at racketeering.
