SP Cayetano, sinulatan mga senador; impeachment court magko-convene sa Mayo 18

Natakada nang mag-convene ng impeachment court ang Senado sa Lunes, Mayo 18, 2026, alinsunod sa liham na inilabas ni Senate President Alan Peter Cayetano para sa kapuwa senador.

Ipapatawag ng Senado ang lahat ng mga senador hinggil sa usapin ng articles of impeachment ni Vice President Sara Duterte, sa ganap na 3:00 ng hapon.

Ayon sa dokumento, agad umanong kumilos ang Senado alinsunod sa impeachment rules at mandato ng Konstitusyon.

“The Senate received the Resolution of the House of Representatives setting forth the said Articles of Impeachment, together with all annexes thereto, on 13 May 2026. Pursuant to Rule I of the Senate Rules of Procedure on Impeachment Trials and consistent with its mandate under Article XI, Section 3 of the Constitution, the Senate has taken proper order of the impeachment and shall immediately proceed to its consideration,” ayon sa liham.

Nakasaad din sa liham na naipabatid na ng Senado sa Kamara ang kanilang naging aksyon sa pamamagitan ng sulat na ipinadala sa Speaker of the House of Representatives noong Mayo 14.

“In view of the foregoing, the Senate shall convene as an Impeachment Court on Monday, 18 May 2026, at 3:00 PM, in accordance with the applicable rules and procedure,” ayon pa sa dokumento.

Pinadadalo rin ang lahat ng senador sa Session Hall sa itinakdang oras at petsa at inatasang magsuot ng kanilang robe bilang senator-judges sa pagbubukas ng impeachment court.

Matatandaang inaprubahan ng House of Representatives ang Articles of Impeachment laban kay Vice President Duterte kaugnay ng iba’t ibang alegasyon laban sa kaniya.

Ito ang unang pagkakataong bubuksan ang usapin ng impeachment ni VP Sara, matapos i-archive ang nauna niyang impeachment complaints sa Senado noon.

Samantala, matatandaang noong Lunes, Mayo 11, nang tuluyang ma-impeach sa Kamara si VP Sara. Ito ang ikalawang pagkakataon na na-impeach sa nasabing institusyon si VP Sara, matapos ang una niyang impeachment noong Pebrero 2025.

Umabot sa 257 ay pumabor sa impeachment ng Pangalawang Pangulo, 25 ang tutol, at siyam naman ang nag-abstain.
