Bumuwelta si Mamamayang Liberal (ML) Partylist Rep. Leila de Lima sa mga dumepedensa kay dating Pangulong Rodrigo Duterte matapos ang naging pag-withdraw sa kampo ng huli ni Atty. Nicholas Kaufman.
Matatandaang sabay na tumiwalag ang Lead Defense Counsel at Associate Counsel ni FPRRD sa ICC na sina Kaufman at Dr. Dov Jacobs noong Mayo 8, 2026, kaugnay sa kinakaharap na mga kasong paglabag sa karapatang pantao ng dating Pangulo sa war on drugs noon.
“In light of the aforementioned, in accordance with Regulation 78(1) of the Regulations of the Court, I hereby respectfully request leave to withdraw as counsel for Mr. Rodrigo Roa Duterte in the case of the Prosecutor v. Rodrigo Roa Duterte,” saad ni Kaufman sa isinumite niyang dokumento sa ICC.
“My withdrawal will not affect the continuity of Mr Duterte’s representation which remains assured through Lead Counsel and the existing defence team,” ani naman ni Jacobs.

Ayon naman sa naging pahayag ni De Lima sa kaniyang Facebook post nitong Sabado, Mayo 9, sinabi niyang leksyon daw para sa mga tumatayong abogado at dumedepensa kay FPRRD ang naging pagtiwalag nina Kaufman at Jacobs.
“This is a bitter lesson for ICC lawyers defending enemies of mankind at the ICC. There is no magic in legal practice that will enable the lawyer to make the evidence disappear. When the evidence is strong, the only viable legal strategy is procedural attack and public appeal,” pagsisimula niya.
Ani De Lima, alam daw ng kampo ni FPRRD na mga propesyonal at praktisado ang mga hukom ng ICC at wala raw magical legal incantation ang magagawa ang mga ito para baguhin ang kapalaran ng dating Pangulo sa kinakaharap niyang mga kaso.
“Unfortunately for the defense, all the professional and experienced ICC judges are not susceptible to both, and the defense lawyers know this,” aniya.
Dagdag pa niya, “They also know there is no magical legal incantation that can change this. It is therefore highly doubtful that Duterte's new lawyer will perform any differently from Kaufman.”
Buwelta ni De Lima, magpapatuloy daw ang pagpapanagot kay FPRRD hanggang makamit ng mga pamilya ng biktima ng war on drugs ang hustisya kahit sinoman daw ang maging abogado ng huli.
“Sinuman ang maging abogado nya, tuloy ang pagpapanagot kay Duterte hanggang makamit ang hustisya,” diin niya.
“Siya rin naman ang nagsabi na handa siyang managot sa libo-libong Pilipino na pinapatay niya sa mga pulis at mga death squads. Huwag siyang maging duwag sa pagharap sa pananagutan,” pagtatapos niya.
