Isiniwalat ni Palace Press Officer at Presidential Communications Office (PCO) Undersecretary Atty. Claire Castro ang mga umano’y dahilan kung bakit napaulat ang sunod-sunod na tala ng pagbaba ng halaga ng piso kontra dolyar.

Sa press briefing na isinagawa ng PCO nitong Huwebes, Abril 30, inisa-isa ni Usec. Castro ang mga dahilan o salik ng pagbaba ng halaga ng piso, na aniya’y nagmula sa mga pahayag ni Department of Economy, Planning, and Development (DEPDev) Secretary Arsenio Balisacan.

“On the record low value of the Philippine peso relative to the US dollar, depreciation results from overlapping factors mainly external to the Philippine economy,” panimula niya.

Aniya, “One is the unusually strong US dollar…this makes the peso weaker simply because the dollar is rising faster…”

“The other main factor is the sharp global price spikes—combined with the country’s dependence on imports. This causes the country’s demand for dollars to spike. In short, the pesos depreciation reflects the rise of the demand for dollars, faster than the supply of dollars,” dagdag pa niya.

Natanong din ang press officer hinggil sa tingin ng Palasyo kung bakit patuloy ang pagbaba ng halaga ng piso.

“Of course, masasabi po natin na dahil sa dulot na rin po ng krisis sa Middle East, maaaring ito ang inasahan,” anang press officer.

Sinabi rin ni Castro ang ilan sa mga hakbang na gagawin ng pamahalaan upang maaksyunan ang nasabing isyu—na aniya’y mula rin sa mga pahayag ni Sec. Balisacan.

“First, it is the [Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas] BSP—our central bank that has the institutional mandate to stabilize the peso and prevent excessive volatility. Its ammunition is sufficient to prevent excessive volatility,” aniya.

Matatandaang naiulat ang pinakahuling new record low ng piso kontra dolyar noong Miyerkules, Abril 29, kung saan sumadsad ang piso sa 61.567 kontra dolyar.
