“The UP Open University (UPOU) mourns the passing of Maureen Keil Santuyo, an Associate of Arts student of UPOU, and Alyssa Alano, a student of UP Diliman, who were killed during a recent military encounter in Negros Occidental,” saad nila sa kanilang pahayag.
Anila, “Ms. Santuyo was known among her peers as a compassionate youth advocate who has committed to supporting and working with marginalized agrarian communities. Our sympathies go out to the family she leaves behind.”
“The University also expresses concerns over circumstances surrounding the military encounter. We call for a transparent and thorough investigation, with full accountability if human rights violations are established. We urge sobriety in public discourse, especially in instances that promote the spread of unverified accusations and the labeling of members of academic community without evidence,” anang UPOU.
“At the same time, we recognize the connection between these events and broader social issues, particularly long-standing agrarian concerns. As an open learning institution, we reaffirm our commitment to contribute to upliftment of disadvantaged Filipinos through accessible learning and to foster a learning environment where our students can think critically, engage with social issues, and contribute to empowering marginalized communities,” dagdag pa nila.
“In this time of loss, UPOU calls for compassion and for a shared commitment to finding the truth, ensuring accountability, and working toward a just, humane, and genuine peace,” pagtatapos nila.
