Nagbitiw na si Senador Sonny Angara sa kaniyang pwesto sa Senado matapos ang pagtalaga sa kaniya bilang kalihim ng Department of Education (DepEd).
Base sa resignation letter ni Angara na may petsang Hulyo 16 at isinapubliko nitong Huwebes, Hulyo 18, ibinahagi ni Angara na ang kaniyang magiging katungkulan sa DepEd ang dahilan ng kaniyang pagbibitiw bilang senador ng bansa.
“I write to formally tender my resignation from my position as Senator of the Republic of the Philippines, effective July 18, 2024. This is in light of my forthcoming appointment as Secretary of the Department of Education (DepEd),” ani Angara sa resignation letter.
“I have served our countrymen through the Senate of the Philippines for 11 years. And in that period, I have been able to shepherd landmark legislation on making quality education and healthcare more accessible; increasing the take-home pay of our workers; increasing the social pensions of senior citizens; exempting PWDs from VAT; giving incentives to our national athletes and coaches; and providing bigger support to Tatak Pinoy industries, among many others.”

“The portfolio that I will be taking on as DepEd Secretary is riddled with very serious challenges. But I am confident that with your support and of the rest of my colleagues at the Senate, these challenges are surmountable,” saad pa niya.
Nasa ikalawang termino na si Angara sa Senado kung saan nakatakda sana itong matapos sa Hunyo 30, 2025.
Samantala, nito lamang ding Huwebes nang opisyal nang ipinasa ni Vice President Sara Duterte kay Angara ang pamunuan ng DepEd sa ginanap na turnover ceremony sa Bulwagan ng Karunungan sa Pasay City.
