Naniniwala si Quezon City 4th district Rep. Marvin Rillo na lalagpas sa ₱1.1 bilyon ang compensation claims mula sa pagkalat ng oil spill sa mga baybay-dagat ng bansa bunsod ng lumubog na MT Princess Empress sa Naujan, Oriental Mindoro noong Pebrero 28.
Sa kaniyang pahayag nitong Linggo, Marso 26, binanggit din ni Rillo, vice chairman ng House Committee on Tourism, ang nangyaring compensation claims sa lumubog na MT Solar sa Guimaras Strait noong 2006.
“If we look back at the MT Solar incident, a total of ₱1.1 billion was paid to settle 26,872 compensation claims, including those filed by owners of beach resorts, tour boat operators, and other tourism service providers hit by the 2006 oil spill,” ani Rillo.
Dahil 17 taon na umano ang nakalipas sa nangyaring paglubog sa Guimaras, maaari umanong lumagpas sa ₱1.1 bilyon ang magiging compensation claims sa lumubog na MT Princess Empress dala rin ng inflation sa kasalukuyan.

“Apart from tourism-related claimants, we expect property owners hit by the oil spill to file compensation claims for damages to beachfront properties, fishing boats, and fishing gear,” ani Rillo. “Those who suffered economic losses, including fisherfolk, seaweed farmers, and fishpond operators, are likewise expected to file claims.”
Matatandaang ibinahagi ng Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) na tinatayang ₱5-milyon ang nawawala sa sektor ng pangisdaan kada araw dahil sa oil spill.
