Kung muling lalaban si four-division world champion Juan Manuel Marquez ng Mexico, gusto ng kanyang trainer na si Hall of Famer Ignacio “Nacho” Beristain na isabak siya kay dating WBC middleweight champion Miguel Angel Cotto ng Puerto Rico.
Tinablan si Beristain sa kantiyaw ng matagal na karibal na si Hall of Fame trainer din na Amerikanong si Freddie Roach na interesado itong ikasa si Marquez sa alagang si Cotto sa isang welterweight bout.
Kapwa nilabanan nina Marquez at Cotto si eight-division world champion Manny Pacquiao ng Pilipinas kaya kabisado na ni Roach ang laro ng Mexican.
Lamang pa rin si Pacquiao kay Marquez sa rekord na 2-1-1 win-loss-draw bagamat napatulog ng Mexican ang Pilipino noong Disyembre 8, 2012 sa Las Vegas, Nevada sa kanilang ikaapat na laban.
Tinalo naman ni Pacquiao si Cotto sa 12th round TKO noong Nobyembre 14, 2009 para maagaw ang WBO welterweight title sa Las Vegas, Nevada rin.
Ayon kay Beristain, kung kaya pa ni Cotto na bumaba sa 147 pounds ay malaki ang tiyansang matuloy ang laban nila ni Marquez.
“To me it seems good, but I don’t know what Juan would say. I think it would be a great fight due to their styles. And I think Juan has a good chance of winning. Juan is smarter.,” sabi ni Beristain sa ESPN Deportes.
“Cotto has a nice style but he is not very smart in deciphering a fight, because [against Canelo] I thought that with a little more determination he could have stamped a unanimous [decision] in his favor but lacked the determination to get the decision,” dagdag ni Beristain. - Gilbert Espeña
