Kinumpirma ng legal team ni Vice President Sara Duterte na kakasa raw sila sa posibleng impeachment trial sa Senado, kahit patuloy nilang kinukuwestiyon ang legalidad ng proseso sa Korte Suprema.

Ayon kay Atty. Michael Poa, tagapagsalita ng impeachment defense team ni Duterte, handa ang kanilang kampo sa isang ganap na paglilitis sakaling umusad ang kaso sa Senado.

“As for the Senate, we will definitely participate—the defense team,” ani Poa sa isang radio interview nitong Sabado, Mayo 2, 2026.

Sinabi ni Poa na kinikilala ng kampo ni Duterte na ang impeachment proceedings sa Senado ay isang “real trial,” kung saan haharap ang depensa at prosekusyon.

Gayunman, nilinaw niya na ang personal na pagdalo ng bise presidente ay depende kung kinakailangan ito sa mga partikular na bahagi ng paglilitis.

“The very presence of the Vice President, of course, will depend on what the incident is in that trial—if it is necessary for her to be there,” paliwanag niya.

Dagdag pa ni Poa, hindi kailangang dumalo si Duterte sa lahat ng pagdinig, tulad ng nangyari sa impeachment trial ni dating Chief Justice Renato Corona noong 2012.

“She will not be present in all the proceedings,” aniya.

Nauna nang ipinaliwanag ng defense team ang hindi pagdalo ni Duterte sa mga pagdinig ng Kamara, iginiit na hindi ito ang “proper forum” at dapat ang Senado ang magsilbing impeachment court.

Noong Abril 29, nagkaisang bumoto ang House Committee on Justice upang magtatag ng probable cause sa mga reklamong impeachment laban kay Duterte, na maaaring magbukas ng daan sa paglilitis sa Senado. Kabilang sa mga alegasyon ang umano’y hindi maipaliwanag na yaman at maling paggamit ng pondo ng bayan.

Binatikos naman ng kampo ni Duterte ang proseso sa Kamara, sinabing kulang umano sa substansiya ang ebidensiyang iniharap at hindi sapat upang magtatag ng probable cause.

“It is the right of every Filipino—if you see a violation, a transgression against your fundamental constitutional rights, such as the right to due process—we should ask the court to rule on whether what the House is doing is right,” ani Poa.

“There is a right way to do everything,” dagdag pa niya.

“For us, as the Vice President’s lawyers, even though we want to answer all the allegations—in fact, last year the Vice President wanted to answer and she herself stated that—when we see things that are constitutionally wrong in the process, it is also our duty to go to the Supreme Court to seek a ruling, not just for the Vice President but for all impeachable officers in the future,” paliwanag pa ni Poa.

Samantala, nilinaw ni Poa na hindi gagamit ng pondo mula sa Office of the Vice President para sa legal na depensa ni Duterte, at itinuturing nila ang kaso bilang personal na usapin.
