SP Chiz Escudero sa pagpapalaya kay Amb. Lacanilao: ‘I did not refuse to sign the contempt order!’

Nilinaw ni Senate President Chiz Escudero ang naging desisyon niyang hindi idetine sa Senado si Ambassador Markus Lacanalo matapos itong ipa-contempt ni Senator Bato dela Rosa, na ipabruhanan ni Sen. Imee Marcos noong Huwebes, Abril 10, 2025.

Matatandaang nagpahayag ng pagkadismaya si Sen. Imee kasunod ng naging pagpapalaya kay Lacanilao at kinuwestiyon kung para saan aniya ang imbestigasyon ng Senado.

“When the Senate's authority is ignored this openly, what's the point of investigations? What's the point of truth?” anang sendora.

Sa inilabas na pahayag ni Escudero nitong Biyernes ng umaga, Abril 11, ipinaliwanag niya ang kaniyang naging disposisyon sa kaso ni Lacanilao.

“For the record, I did not refuse to sign the contempt order of Ambasador Markus Lacanilao. Senator Marcos released her statement and flaunted to the media her signed arrest and detention order even before I could see, much less, receive a copy of it,” ani Escudero.

Pinuna rin ni Escudero ang tila pagbabalewala ni Sen. Imee sa proseso ng Senado kung saan ang pagpapaaresto umano ng isang resource person ay kailangan pang dumaan sa Senate President, bagama’t may kapangyarihang magpataw ang chairperson ng komite.

“For reasons unknown, Senator Imee Marcos appears to have disregarded this longstanding rule or conveniently forgotten that the approval of the Senate President is not automatic ministerial simply because she desires it,” ani Escudero.

Dagdag pa niya, “After several hours of Ambassador Lacanilao’s unauthorized detention, I directed his release, both as a matter of regularity and out of humanitarian consideration as his grandfather is to be laid to rest.”

Iginiit din ni Escudero na paglalabas niya ng show cause order kay Lacanilao upang makapagpaliwanag daw ito hinggil sa nakabinbin niyang contempt order sa Senado.

“In order to comply with the requisites of due process, I am issuing a ‘show cause order’ today for Ambassador Lacanilao to explain within 5 days why he should not be cited in contempt as requested by Sen. Imee Marcos. I shall decide whether or not to sign his arrest/detention only thereafter,” anang Senate President.
