Nagbigay ng tugon ang Palasyo kaugnay sa sinabi ni Atty. Nicholas Kaufman, lead counsel ni dating Pangulong Rodrigo Duterte sa kasong crimes against humanity sa International Criminal Court (ICC), tungkol sa isyu ng “political manipulation” bilang pinakamalaking hamon umano sa kaso ng kliyente nito.
Sa ginanap na press briefing nitong Martes, Abril 8, sinabi ni Presidential Communications Office (PCO) Usec. Claire Castro na inaasahan na raw ang gayong depensa ni Kaufman.
“Siguro, mas maganda rin po talaga kasi sinabi niya po na political manipulation of arguments. So, it is also better for him to know who manipulates who,” saad ni Castro.
Dagdag pa niya, “And of course, sabi nga natin, he should also be aware of the flight of the EJK families; of the EJK victims who are now being allegedly harassed by some of the Duterte supporters according to Atty. [Kristina] Conti. So, sana malaman po niya ‘yan. "
Gayunman, nauunawaan naman daw ni Castro ang opinyon ni Kaufman lalo na’t kinakatawan nito ang suspek na umamin umano sa mga ginawang pagpatay.
“He will definitely face some difficulties in defending his client regarding the admission made by his client. But we wish him all the luck because, still, we have to presume that the suspect is still innocent until proven guilty.”
Kasalukuyang nakapiit si Duterte sa The Hague, Netherlands dahil sa nabanggit na kaso. Nakatakda naman ang confirmation of charges sa Setyembre 23, 2025.
