Kabilang umano si dating Manila Archbishop Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle sa dalawang nangungunang kandidato para pumalit kay Pope Francis.
Ito ay batay na rin sa artikulo ng isang London-based Roman Catholic monthly newspaper, na inilabas matapos na pumutok ang mga ispekulasyon hinggil sa posibleng pagbibitiw sa pwesto ng Santo Papa dahil sa isyung pangkalusugan.
Nabatid na bukod kay Tagle, isa pa sa nangungunang kandidato para pumalit kay Pope Francis ay si Esztergom-Budapest Archbishop Cardinal Péter Erdő, ng Hungary.

“If symbolism matters, then Erdő vs. Tagle would be a contest not just of ideas but of perception and identity,” dagdag pa nito.
Maging ang mga bookmakers ay nag-predict na isang Asian cardinal ang papalit sa Santo Papa.
Sa isang artikulo sa Newsweek kamakailan, binigyan si Tagle ng ‘5/1 odds’ na maihalal bilang susunod na Santo Papa ng British bookmakers OLBG.
Sinabi pa nito na si Tagle ay nakikita bilang ‘top papal contender’ dahil na rin sa sunud-sunod na promosyon nito, na malinaw na nagpapakita ng tiwala sa kanya ni Pope Francis.
Matatandaang si Tagle, na tinaguriang ‘Asian Francis,’ ay itinalaga ni Pope Francis bilang pinuno ng Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples noong 2019.
Noong Hunyo naman, itinalaga siyang muli ng Santo Papa sa Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of Sacraments.
Miyembro rin si Tagle ng Congregation for Catholic Education, Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life, Congregation for the Oriental Churches, Congregation for Pontifical Councils, Congregation for Legislative Texts, Congregation for Inter-religious Dialogue, Congregation for the Administration of the Patrimony of the Apostolic See, Cardinal Commission for the Supervision of the Institute for the Works of Religion, at Gran Chancellor of the Pontifical University Urbaniana.
Bago naitala ni Pope Francis sa Vatican, si Tagle ay naging pangulo rin ng Caritas Internationalis.
Itinalaga naman siyang Cardinal ni Pope Benedict XVI.
