Sinabi ng Malacañang nitong Lunes, Peb. 21, na ang mga isyu sa karapatang pantao sa Pilipinas na iniakyat ng European Union (EU) Parliament ay ginagamit ng mga kritiko ni Pangulong Duterte upang maimpluwensyahan ang resulta ng paparating na pambansang halalan.
Sa isang pahayag, sinabi ni Cabinet secretary at acting presidential spokesperson Karlo Nograles na gumawa na ng mga hakbang ang gobyerno upang matugunan ang mga isyu ng EU Parliament sa sitwasyon ng karapatang pantao sa bansa.
“An existing dialogue mechanism with the EU is already in place, and we have expressed in numerous occasions our willingness to work and cooperate with the EU in order to shed light on the concerns they have raised,” ani Nograles.
“The actions taken by the government in this regard are a clear demonstration of our compliance with conventions on human rights, labor, and good governance, among others,” dagdag niya.

Binanggit din ni Nograles na ang mga isyung ito ay ginagamit lamang ng mga “detractors” ng Administrasyong Duterte para “kulayan ang mga pananaw ng mga botanteng Pilipino na sa Mayo ay pipili ng mga susunod na pinuno ng bansa.”
“The President is at the tail-end of his administration and—despite the challenges brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic—is poised to step down with the highest satisfaction, approval, and trust ratings of any post-EDSA chief executive,” aniya.
“We urge those in the international community to view the government’s actions through the eyes of our people in order to have a better appreciation of the steps the Duterte Administration has taken to ensure the safety, security, and prosperity of the country’s over 100 million citizens,” ani Nograles.
Ang European Parliament ay naglabas ng isang resolusyon noong Peb. 16 kung saan iginiit nito ang panawagan sa Pilipinas “to immediately end all violence and human rights violations targeting suspected drug offenders, including unlawful killings, arbitrary arrests, acts of torture and other abuses, and to disband private and state-backed paramilitary groups involved in the ‘war on drugs’.”
Nagbabala rin ito sa pag-withdraw ng mga pribilehiyo ng kalakalan ng Pilipinas sa EU dahil sa sitwasyon ng karapatang pantao sa bansa.
Gayunpaman, nagpahayag ng kumpiyansa si Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Secretary Ramon Lopez na hindi tatalikuran ng EU ang pagtulong sa pagtugon sa kahirapan sa Pilipinas sa pamamagitan ng patuloy na duty-free treatment sa mga exports ng bansa sa ilalim ng Generalized Scheme of Preferences (GSP) Plus nito.
Sa ilalim ng GSP Plus, matatamasa ng Pilipinas ang zero duties sa pag-export nito sa EU ng mga produkto na nasa ilalim ng mahigit 6,000 taripa linya.
Tinukoy din ni Lopez ang mga isyu sa karapatang pantao at kawalan ng kalayaan sa pamamahayag bilang "fake news" at nagbibigay lamang ng "false impressions" sa totoong sitwasyon sa Pilipinas.
“They should visit our beautiful country… They should ask the Filipinos in their companies or communities. They should also ask the EU citizens, the EU business chambers in the country. The 72 percent of population who gave a high approval rating for Philippine President Duterte cannot be wrong,” ani Lopez.
