Nagbigay ng tulong-pinansyal na nagkakahalaga ng P15.95 milyon ang Department of Science and Technology (DOST) sa pamamagitan ng Science for Change-Business Innovation Through science and technology (BIST) for Industry Program sa isang veterinary research and diagnostics company sa Batangas.
Sa pagbanggit sa pangangailangan para sa pagpapaunlad ng pananaliksik sa bakuna ng hayop, sinabi ng DOST na ang tulong-pinansyal na ipinagkaloob sa BioAssets Corporation ay gagamitin upang makuha ang mga pinakabagong teknolohiya na makatutulong sa pagtatatag ng isang point-of-need animal health diagnostic system.
Ang Mobile Laboratory Unit ay nilagyan ng mga portable diagnostic device at ise-set-up sa mga lugar na limitado ang mapagkukunan.
Sinabi ng DOST sa pamamagitan ng BIST-funded Program research, nilalayon ng BioAssets Corporation na magbigay ng foundation support para sa pagbuo ng mga bakuna laban sa African Swine Fever (ASF).

“With great potential, Bio Assets Corporation through the BIST program may be able to expand the function of vaccine R&D and address the ASF,” sabi ni DOST Secretary Fortunato T. de la Peña.
“Through R&D, we are able to find innovative technologies that will protect public health and ensure food safety,” dagdag niya.
Sinabi ni DOST Undersecretary Rowena L. Guevara na ang BIST Program ay idinisenyo upang tulungan ang mga kumpanyang pag-aari ng mga Pilipino na magbago at umunlad sa pamamagitan ng pagkuha ng mga bago at nauugnay na kagamitan sa R&D.
“The BIST program strengthens the capabilities of our local companies and enables them to overcome barriers through the outputs of R&D,” dagdag ni Guevarra.
Ayon sa Food and Agriculture Organization, 51 sa 81 probinsya sa bansa ang may kumpirmadong kaso ng ASF noong Hulyo 2021.
Ang ASF ay isang viral disease na nakahahawa sa mga baboy sa lahat ng yugto, na nagdudulot ng pagdurugo sa balat at internal organs ng baboy, na humahantong sa pagkamatay nito.
Ayon sa Bureau of Animal Industry, ang industriya ng baboy ay nag-ambag ng 16 percent ng paglago ng agrikultura ng Pilipinas at kung hindi matutugunan, ang ASF ay makikitang negatibong nakakaaapekto sa ekonomiya ng Pilipinas.
“As of the moment, the local swine industry only employs strict biosecurity measures and depopulation. The BRIDGES project will establish preventive measures that will support both point-of-need and precision diagnostic measures. Gaps on these aspects of animal health translate to multi-billion pesos potential income loss based on the reported number of pigs culled during the ASF crisis,” sabi ni BioAssets Corporation CEO and BIST Project Leader Dr. Homer D. Panua.
“Through the BIST Program, we hope to employ innovative measures that would control the transmission of disease and prevent further losses in pork production. Support from DOST such as the BIST, will help the private sector and the government in addressing the challenges we face with infectious diseases in animal production through a comprehensive and unified approach,” dagdag niya.
