Nilagdaan ng Pilipinas at Thailand ang isang partnership pact para sa pagpapatupad ng isang scholarship program na naglalayong mapakinabangan ng mga Filipino health professional.
Ayon kay Department of Science and Health Secretary Fortunato “Boy” T. de la Peña, nilagdaan ang memorandum of understanding (MOU) nitong Disyembre 15 sa pagitan ng DOST-Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (PCHRD) at Faculty of Tropical Medicine (FTM) of the Mahidol University (SEAMEO TROPMED Thailand).
Itinatag noong 1966, ang SEAMEO TROPMED ay isang regional cooperation network na nagsilibing focal point sa mas mataas na edukasyon at pananaliksik sa tropical medicine at public health.
Sa ilalim ng MOU, ang DOST-PCHRD at Mahidol University, isang autonomous research sa Thailand, ang magsasagawa ng “scientific and technological cooperation through the development, implementation, and administration of a scholarship program, as well as the promotion of collaboration between other relevant scientific institutions and organizations from both countries,” ani de la Peña.

Sinabi niya na kabilang sa mga saklaw ng joint undertaking ang epidemiologic studies, endemic and emerging diseases, diagnosis of tropical infections and tropical medicine at ang public health.
“The partnership will significantly contribute in building expanded capacities in the field and achieving our overall STI (science, technology, innovation) goals.”
Inilarawan ni DOST-PCHRD Director Dr. Jaime C. Montoya ang bagong partnership bilang isang strategic approach sa gitna ng lumalaking saklaw at pagiging kumplikado ng kalusugan at kaugnay na pananaliksik.
Binanggit ni de la Pena ang pangako ng SEAMO TROPMED na suportahan ang partnership. Nagpahayag ng pag-asa ang SEAMO TROPMED na ang MOU ay magbibigay ng mas maraming opurtunidad sa para sa mga Filipino health professional na dumalo sa post graduate degree program sa Tropical Medicine sa Thailand.
Ang MOU ay magsisilbing modelo sa iba pang mga miyembro ng SEAMO tungkol sa paggamit ng resources sa pagpapalakas ng mga pagsisikap sa pagpapaunlad ng health regional network sa Tropical Medicine and Public Health sa ilalim ng Southeast Asian Ministers of Education.
Ang misyon ng network ay “to promote health and to prevent diseases through training and research, scientific fora, publications and information dissemination, personnel exchanges, institutional partnerships, and technical consultant services.”
