Sinabi ni Senador Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan nitong Martes, Dis. 7 na ang patuloy na smuggling sa mga daungan ay sumisira sa kakayahan ng bansa para sa self-sufficiency.
Binigyang-diin ito ni Pangilinan sa Senate plenary session kung saan sinuportahan niya ang panukala ni Senate President Vicente Sotto III na imbestigahan ang umano’y smuggling ng mga produktong agrikultural sa Pilipinas.
Pagkatapos ng privilege speech ni Sotto sa efficacy o kakulangan nito ng mga operasyon ng Bureau of Customs laban sa smuggling ng mga produktong agrikultura, nagpasya ang Senado na bumuo ng isang Committee of Whole para imbestigahan ang suliranin.
Sinabi niya na naghain siya ng katulad na panukala, ang Senate Resolution No. 922 noong Setyembre, na nag-uutos sa Senate Committee on Agriculture, Food and Agrarian Reform na magsagawa ng inquiry, para sa paghabi ng batasa kaugnay ng pagdami ng mga gulay mula China na nakikipagkumpitensya sa mga lokal na magsasaka sa bansa.

“Again, congratulations Mr. President. We thank the Senate President for championing the cause of our farmers and our fisherfolk. I am hoping that we will be able to address this perennial problem on smuggling that affects the incomes and welfare of our farmers and fisherfolk,”sabi ni Pangilinan.
Ibinahagi naman ni Senador Grace Poe ang sentimyento ni Senate President Vicente Sotto III sa “never-ending issue of smuggling at the Bureau of Customs (BOC).”
Sa plenary session ngayong araw kung saan nagbigay ng privilege speech si Sotto ukol sa isyu ng BOC kaugnay ng smuggling ng agri products, ikinuwento ni Poe na nakatanggap ang kanyang tanggapan ng reklamo hinggil sa isang insidente kung saan ang isang partikular na joint venture ang nakakuha ng karapatang palitan ang umiiral at lumang port system sa BOC na may moderno at pinahusay na sistema.
Gayunpaman, hanggang ngayon, ang lumang sistemang ito ay hindi pa napapalitan, aniya.
“I’m also interested to know what has happened since the right has been awarded. What is taking them so long to fund, if it is needed so that it could improve the overall process of the BOC? Is it also a manifestation of corruption at the agency? The problem at the Customs is like a pandemic that could not be cured by the administration,’’ ani Poe.
‘’Hopefully, we can trace the problem, through our oversight function, and those who should be held accountable,”dagdag ng senadora.
