Binira ng political coalition na 1Sambayan nitong Linggo, Disyembre 5, si Department of Energy (DOE) Secretary Alfonso Cusi kaugnay ng pagsasampa nito ng libelo laban sa pitong media company na naglathala sa umano'y irregularidad sa Malampaya gas field buyout.
Sa pahayag ng coalition na pinangungunahan nina retired Supreme Court Senior Associate Justice Antonio Carpio, dating Foreign Affairs chief Albert del Rosario, at retired Ombudsman Conchita Carpio-Morales, ang naturang hakbang ni Cusi ay isang paraan upang "masupil nito ang malayang pamamahayag" sa bansa.
“1SAMBAYAN opposes any action to suppress the freedom of the press, and calls out DOE Secretary Alfonso Cusi for filing baseless and unnecessary libel cases against the seven media organizations just because they reported – as they should – on the graft suit the secretary is facing before the Ombudsman in connection with the heavily-criticized Malampaya gas field buyout to known Duterte ally Dennis Uy. The Malampaya gas field buyout is our citizen’s concern. Do not shoot the messenger, Secretary Cusi. We encourage you to air your side of the issue instead. This is how democracy works,” pahayag ng 1Sambayan.
Kabilang sa idinemanda ni Cusi ang Manila Bulletin dahil sa paglalathala ng artikulong may kaugnayan sa kasong graft na kinakaharap nito, kasama si Davao City-based businessman Dennis Uy na nag-ugat sa kontrobersya sa Malampaya gas field.

Kasama rin sa kinasuhan ang mga reporters, editors at opisyal ng Rappler, ABS-CBN, Business World, Philstar, GMA News Online, at Business Mirror.
Iniharap ang reklamo sa Taguig City Prosecutor's Office nitong Nobyembre 29 kung saan humihingi ito ng P200 milyon bawat isa sa mga natukoy na media outlet dahil umano sa "pagkasira ng kanyang reputasyon."
Nanindigan naman ang 1Sambayan na may "mandato ang pitong media company na ginagarantiyahan ng Konstitusyon" upang magbigay ng impormasyon sa publiko.
“Cusi’s action is meant to stifle the free flow of information to the public, by employing legal harassment tactics against the media organizations. His suit aims to cow the media into silence and keep our citizens in the dark,” sabi pa ng 1Sambayan.
Nag-ugat ang demanda nang isapubliko ng pitong media outlet ang impormasyon kaugnay ng graft na isinampa sa Office of the Ombudsman laban kina Cusi at Uy nitong Oktubre 18.
Kabilang sa naghain ng graft laban kina Cusi at Uy sina US-based Filipino lawyers Rodel Rodis at Loida Nicolas Lewis, na nagsabing nilabag ng kalihim ang Republic Act 3019 (Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act) nang aprubahan ng DOE ang 45 percent buyout ng Malampaya shares ng subsidiary company na pag-aari ni Uy.
