Ikinatuwa ng Palasyo ang desisyon ng International Criminal Court (ICC) na suspindihin ang “investigative activities” nito sa war on drugs sa Pilipinas, kilalang pangunahing kampanya ng kasalukuyang administrasyong Duterte.
“We welcome the judiciousness of the new ICC prosecutor, who has deemed it fit to give the matter a fresh look,” ani Cabinet Secretary and Acting Presidential Spokesperson Karlo Nogralesnitong Sabado, Nob. 20.
“We reiterate that it is the position of the Philippine government that the International [ICC] has no jurisdiction over it,” dagdag niya.
Ngunit ang imbestigasyon ng ICC sa madugong drug war ay naging pasanin sa isipan ni Pangulong Duterte. Noong nakaraang Oktubre, sinabi pa niyang ihahanda niya ang kanyang pagreretiro sa politika.
Magpinsang paslit nagkayayaang maligo sa lawa, nalunod
Sinabi ng mga ulat na ang pagsuspinde ng imbestigasyon ay “kasunod ng kahilingan mula sa gobyerno.” Kinumpirma ito ni Nograles.
Ayon sa kanya, hindi pinipigilan ang gobyerno na makipag-ugnayan sa ICC at ““It should be stressed that the government’s communication to the ICC was conditioned on the fact that in making that communication, the Philippine government was not waiving its position regarding the ICC’s lack of jurisdiction.”
“We trust that the matter will be resolved in favor of the exoneration of our government and the recognition of the vibrancy of our justice system,”sabi ng Cabinet Secretary.
Nauna nang nagpasya si Duterte na tumakbo sa pagka-senador sa May 2022 elections, at sa gayon ay posibleng ipagpaliban ang kanyang dapat na pagreretiro sa poitika.
