Inirekomenda kahapon ng World Health Organization (WHO) na gamitin lamang muna ang Ivermectin sa clinical trials upang matukoy kung epektibo nga talaga ito na panlunas laban sa coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).
Ayon kay Socorro Escalante, coordinator for essential medicines and health technologies ng WHO Western Pacific, ang naturang mungkahi ay nag-ugat mula sa analysis ng available data sa Ivermectin.
“The evidence has shown that there is no direct effect or any mechanism of any antiviral action against SARS-CoV-2 that currently exists,” ani Escalanta, sa isang online press conference.

Ang SARS-CoV-2 ay ang virus na nagdudulot ng COVID-19.
“The effects of Ivermectin on end points that are being studied such as mortality, prevention of mechanical ventilation, hospital admissions, duration of hospitalizations and viral clearance are all uncertain. It is very important to emphasize that at this point the WHO’s recommendation for this drug is not to use it except in the context of [a] clinical trial,” aniya pa.
Nauna rito, may ilang indibidwal, kabilang na ang mga mambabatas, ang nagsusulong ng paggamit ng Ivermectin bilang potensiyal na lunas laban sa COVID-19, kahit na ito’y hindi rehistrado paga magamit sa tao.
Nag-alok pa kamakailan si Anakalusugan party-list Representative Mike Defensor na mamamahagi ng naturang gamot ng libre sa mga pasyente sa Quezon City dahil nasubukan na aniya niya ang epekto nito.
Nagbabala naman ang Department of Health (DOH) at Food and Drug Administration (FDA) na ang pamamahagi at paggamit ng mga hindi rehistradong gamot ay labag sa batas.
Mayroon na ring aplikasyon para sa compassionate use ng Ivermectin na nakabinbin ngayon sa tanggapan ng FDA.
Samantala, sinabi naman ni Dr. Rontgene Solante, ang head ng Adult Infectious Diseases and Tropical Medicine ng San Lazaro Hospital, ang naturang gamot ay maaaring ipagkaloob bilang off-label indication ngunit dapat aniyang imonitor ng mga doktor ang mga pasyente.
Nagbabala siya na dahil hindi ito aprubado ng FDA ay ilegal ito at magiging pananagutan ng mga doktor kung may hindi magandang mangyari sa pasyente.
“Obviously it’s illegal because it’s not approved by the FDA for use of this particular indication... If you are using off-labeled indication then that’s now the liability of the physician if any untoward incident will happen to the patient then that’s his liability,” aniya pa, sa panayam sa telebisyon.
“We need to look at how this drug will affect the kidneys, the liver and the other side effects. They’re giving that for free. I hope they will also be monitoring the individuals closely for adverse reaction,” dagdag pa niya.
Inihayag pa ng doktor na ang Ivermectin ay wala pang napapatunayang benepisyo sa mga COVID-19 patients.
“It did not reduce mortality, it did not improve clinical manifestations, (these are) more or less these are the 2 important parameters we're still looking at,” aniya. “If you really want to give Ivermectin...let’s start a trial on this and let’s see what the trial tells us.”
Hindi rin inirerekomenda ni Solante ang pag-self-medicate ng mga COVID-19 patients na naka- home quarantine at sa halip ay dapat na lamang aniyang magpahinga ang mga ito, mag-isolate, kumain ng tamang pagkain at uminom ng maraming tubig.
Kung may ubo aniya ay maaaring uminom ng gamot sa ubo ang mga ito at kung may lagnat ay maaari namang uminom ng paracetamol.
Hindi rin umano nila ipinapayo ang pag-inom ng antibiotic sa mild COVID dahil posibleng magresulta ito sa drug resistance. “We discourage them getting an antibiotic because there are already studies abroad that if you have mild COVID, what is the risk you have a bacterial infection and it’s really very low. Baka next year ang problema natin drug resistance na naman."
