Sinabi ng Department of Health (DOH) na halos 60 porsyento ng populasyon ng bansa ang dapat na mabakunahan laban sa COVID-19, sa sandaling mayroon nang bakuna, upang makamit ang “herd immunity.”

“We would need about 60 to 70 percent of the population immunized so that we can have herd immunity,” sinabi ni Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire.

Ang herd immunity ay nakakamit “when a sufficient number of people in the community is immune to an infectious disease,” ayon sa DOH.

“We are not saying that we are tying up our hope dito lang sa bakuna but really alam natin [we know that it is] essential,” ani Vergeire.

Sinabi ni Vergeire na kailangan pa ng gobyerno na maglaan ng karagdagang badyet upang makakuha ng sapat na bilang ng mga bakuna para sa publiko.

“When we talked about P12.5 billion (budget), that is just covering about 20 percent of our population, so we still need a budget for about 40 percent of the population para lang ma-reach natin yung [just so we can reach the] 60 percent for herd immunity,” winika ni Vergeire.

“There are a lot of resources required so that we will be able to provide this response that we are providing to our population and protect them so that everybody gets to be safe,” idinagdag niya.

Matatandaan na naglaan ang DOH ng paunang P2.4 bilyon mula sa badyet nitong 2021 para sa pagbili ng mga bakuna sa COVID-19, at idinagdag na kulang pa rin sa P10 bilyon upang masakop ang 20 porsyento ng populasyon ng bansa. Nangako ang House of Representatives na taasan ang badyet para sa pagbili ng mga bakuna.

Kapag mayroon nang bakuna, sinabi ni Pangulong Rodrigo Duterte na dapat unahin ang nasa mahirap na sektor, pulisya, at tauhan ng militar.
