MAGPAPATULOY ang libreng serbisyong medical ng Department of Health (DOH) sa hanay ng mga boxers and mixed martial arts (MMA) fighters na nasa pangangasiwa ng Games and Amusements Board (GAB).

Sa inilabas na Department Memorandum No. 2020-0445 ni DOH Secretary Francisco Duque III na may petsang Oktubre 16, 2020, magpapatuloy ang pagbibigay ng libreng serbisyong medical sa lahat ng GAB-licensed boxers at MMA fighters hanggang Disyembre 31, 2020 o mas maaga depende sa bagong mapagkakasunduang Memorandum of Agreement (MOA)  sa pagitan ng DOH at GAB.

“Relative to the expiration of the DOH-GAB MOA on August 15, 2020 and upon the request of GAB due to the effects of COVID-19 pandemic to their professional careers, the 28 selected DOH hospitals, three (3) specialty hospitals, and other pertinent DOH offices as enumerated  in A.O No. 2019-0006 are herby directed to continue the provision of free services to boxing and mixed martial arts professionals based on the said issuance until December 31, 2020 or earlier should a new MOA comes into effect. Provision of services shall still be guided by the aforementioned issuance,” ayon sa inilabas na memo ni Duque.

Ikinalugod ni GAB Chairman Abraham ‘Baham’ Mitra ang kagyat na pagtugon ng DOH, higit sa panahon na lugmok ang professional sports, kabilang ang komunidad ng boxing at MMA dahil sa pandemic.

“Malaging bagay ito para sa ating mga atleta. Nagsisimula pa lamang magbukas ang pro sports at ang pagbabalik ng mga promotion ay tapik sa balikat para sa kabuhayan ng ating mga boxers at MMA fighters. Dahil libre ang kanilang medical, masisiguro ng mga atleta na yung makukuha nilang premyo at mailalaan lamang nila para sa kabuhayan ng pamilya,” pahayag ni Mitra.

“As the national agency tasked with the regulation and supervision of professional boxing and other contact sports in the country, we are grateful to DOH for this assistance."

“Considering that the mandatory diagnostic, medical, and neurological tests proved to be costly for many GAB licensees, this extension is indeed a big help to our pro boxers, MMA and muay thai fighters, especially during these difficult times," sambit ni Mitra.

Ang libreng medical para sa boxers at MMA fighters ay prioridad na isinulong ng GAB bilang bahagi ng reporma sa programa ng ahensiya simula nang mailuklok si Mitra sa GAB ng Pangulong Duterte, katuwang sina Commissioners Mar Masanguid at Ed Trinidad nitong 2016. Isang taon ang nakalipas, tinanghal na Commission of the Year ang GAB ng prestihiyoso at pinakamalaking boxing body sa mundo na World Boxing Council (WBC).

Sa pagpupursige ni Mitra, nalagdaan nitong Agosto 15, 2018 ang MOA sa DOH para sa libreng diagnostic, medical at neurologic examination para sa Pinoy boxers at MMA fighters sa loob ng dalawang taon. Sakop nito ang mga atleta na bago pa lamang nagpalisensya sa GAB.

Ang naturang programa ay kinilala sa international boxing community at mismong si WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman, Jr. ang nagpalabas ng memorandum para gamitin ang GAB medical programa bilang blueprint para sa mahigit 100 miyembro at affiliated boxing organization ng WBC.

Nagpahatid din ng pasasalamat sa DOH si Philippine MMA founder Alvin Aguilar at muling pinapurihan ang liderato ni Mitra na tunay na ‘pro-active, hardworking at nagbibigay ng malasakit’ sa mga boxers at MMA fighters.

“We don’t need another boxing and combat sports commission. GAB is enough, its pro-active program is a big lift to the boxing and MMA communities,” pahayag ni Aguilar, pangulo rin ng Wrestling Federation of the Philippines (WFP) at Jiu-Jitsu Federation of the Philippines.
