NASA ikatlong taon na ang Istorya ng Pag-Asa Film Festival na pinamamahalaan ni Bise Presidente Leni Robredo katuwang ang Ayala Foundation.

Sa ginanap na press launch ng IPFF sa Clock In Ayala North Exchange, Makati City ay nasabi ni VP Leni na successful at maraming natulungang filmmakers ang naunang dalawang taon ng nasabing film festival.

Nagkuwento ang Bise Presidente ng bansa kung paano nagsimulang ma-involved sa project, “just to give you the context and the history of how Istorya ng Pag-asa became a project of the Office of the Vice President, this actually started when I was invited to an event called Araw ng Pag-asa, Araw ng Pagbasa in November 2016 at the Ayala Museum.

“I was actually one of those Istorya ng Pag-asa stories featured at the Ayala Museum. And when I went, I was with two other Istorya ng Pag-asa champs, one of them was Hidilyn Diaz and the other was a lady from Quezon City, a turon vendor by the name of Nanay Lorna.

“So nakilala ko when I went there, Hidilyn Diaz told us the story of her life and very inspiring iyong kuwento. Kinuwento niya how she was born to a very poor family in Mindanao. Kinuwento niya kung papaano siya nag-ensayo noon na ang gamit niya lang, mga lata ng gatas na merong simento sa loob. Kinuwento niya how she was able to be very good at her craft and iyon iyong naging turning point for success.

“Si Nanay Lorna nagkuwento sa dinanas niyang hirap, nagtitinda siya, naglalako ng turon but ano siya, single mother. But she was able to send all her four children to school – all very successful. One was a law student, one was a nurse, one was a teacher. Iyong youngest niya, Intarmed student sa PGH noong time na nagkita kami doctor na yata siya ngayon.

“After noon, I went out of the event. I was very inspired but I did nothing. Pero right after the event, siguro a few days after, I was invited to another event in Cagayan de Oro. Iyong pangalan ng event sa Cagayan de Oro, “Let us Change the Conversation.” It was an event that was sponsored by young people – students of Xavier University.

“Pagpunta ko sa event, ang unang pinag-uusapan, how the young people wanted to put a stop to all the negativity already that is in our midst. Sabi niya, “Kaya tayo nagtitipon-tipon ngayon kasi we want to affect change already. We want to do something about it.” So napaka-inspiring nu’ng napaka-inspiring nu’ng event.

“Nakabit ko siya sa event na ‘to. So ang sinasabi ko. Buti pa ‘tong mga bata, nakaisip kung papaano babaguhin iyong nangyayari sa paligid.

“Tapos ako biktima rin ako ng mga fake news, ng lahat pero wala akong ginagawa. So binalikan ko ‘yung iyong sponsors ng “Araw ng Pagbasa, Araw ng Pag-asa.” Pinakiusapan ko if we can adopt the Pag-asa part. So that was the birth of Istorya ng Pag-asa as a project of the Office of the Vice President.

“Iyong umpisa niya, roving photo gallery. Talagang ano siya, talagang dinadala na mga pictures saka stories ng mga fineature – umiikot sa mga schools, sa mga government offices, sa mga malls iyong marami iyong human traffic para nababasa ng mga tao iyong mga kuwento ng finifeature. Iyon iyong start niya pero as we were about to celebrate our first anniversary nagstart kasi kami November 27 so ngayon is the third anniversary.

“Nagstart kami ng November 2016 we celebrated our first year, naisip namin to bring it a step further kasi after nu’ng launch ng Istorya ng Pag-asa, we brought it all over the Philippines.

“Nagkaroon kami ng sites sa Joann. Nagkaroon kami ng sites sa Baguio. Naging partner namin doon iyong University of Cordilleras. Sa Quezon City, all the six districts of Quezon City. In Cavite, many, three districts, I think, in Cavite. Of course, in Bicol region, meron kaming Camarines Norte, CamSur, Albay, Sorsogon, and Tabaco, Legazpi also. Tapos in Visayas pala, Palawan pa pala. In Visayas, Capiz, Iloilo, Bacolod, Negros Occidental, Cebu City, Cebu Province, Negros Oriental. Sa Mindanao naman, Cagayan de Oro. So iyong buong taon, we were able to find local stories of hope – mga local na Istorya ng Pag-asa. Noong magfi-first year na siya, sabi namin, dapat ano na, one step further na, naisip namin iyong Film Festival.”

At dahil maganda ang resulta sa unang taon ng Istorya ng Pag-Asa Film Festival at maraming gustong sumali kaya nasundan pa.

“During the first year anniversary celebration, noong November 27, 2017, naisip namin to launch Istorya ng Pag-asa Film Festival and we are very, very lucky. Now we have for our partner, Ayala Foundation.

“Nandito sila. Kaya maraming salamat sa Ayala Foundation. They agreed to be our partner and napaka ano ‘to, God-sent ng Ayala Foundation kasi we were able to do what we wanted to do with the film festival.

“So the first iyong first film festival, we received 73 entries and out of the 73 entries, dapat 10 lang na finalists iyong pipiliin, pero hindi makapagdecide sa 10 so dinagdagan namin ng 15 and merong mga special awards.

“And ang best film doon ay iyong Ang Biyahe ni Marlon by Florence Rosinni. You might have watched it already. Marlon was an Uber driver siyempre, wala ng Uber, Grab driver na siya na meron siyang Tourette syndrome.

“Iyong Tourette syndrome, naalala niyo? Iyong Tourette syndrome, parang neurological syndrome na meron siyang ticks, iyong parang gumaganun, ganun na ang pasahero niya parang natatakot sa kanya because they could not understand what Tourette syndrome was.

“So ang ginawa ni Marlon, para hindi natatakot ang kaniyang mga pasahero, naglagay siya ng parang karatula sa kaniyang Uber ine-explain niya iyong kaniyang sakit, “Huwag kayo matatakot sa akin. Ganito lang ako kasi mayroon akong Tourette syndrome pero hindi niya nathe-threaten iyong safety ng pagmamaneho ko.”

“One of his passengers, na-inspire na grabe kay Marlon. Ang ginawa nung kaniyang passenger, gumawa ng Facebook post na nagpapasalamat siya kay Marlon, iyong kuwento ni Marlon, and iyong Facebook post, nag-viral nang grabe. So isa siya sa mga entries doon and nanalo siya. And pagkatapos noon, naging very powerful iyong story ni Marlon. In fact, we brought Marlon to some parts of the Philippines to tell his story.

“So ito, ang laking revelation sa aming nu’ng film festival na iyon kasi parang nakita namin na mas powerful pala iyong film kesa sa doon sa dati naming ginagawa na roving photo gallery lang siya.

“Kasi iyong roving photo gallery lang siya, malapit siya sa traffic ng tao pero parang tamad na iyong mga tao magbasa. Titignan nila iyong mga pictures pero nagsi-speed read doon sa mga stories. Pero pag film, iba. Kasi iyong film, talagang inuulit-ulit pa nila at maraming lugar na nagre-request sa amin na magpalabas doon sa mga lugar nila. In fact, that is one of our plans ngayon na idadala sa mga communities kasi maraming gusto dalhin doon sa kanila.

“So from the success of the first film festival, noong second anniversary ng Istorya ng Pag-asa, we launched the second Istorya ng Pag-asa Film Festival.

“Nangyari ito noong June 8, 2019. Ngayon lang na June. Ito, kung naging very successful iyong first, lalo na iyong pangalawa. Kasi iyong pangalawa, we received so many more entries.

“We had 98 entries. Rinestriktuhan na namin iyong 10 finalists tapos ang nag-Best Film naman doon ay iyong Ka Dodoy. I don’t know if anyone of you was able to attend the second film festival.

“So iyong Ka Dodoy, ito kasi hindi natatapos iyong relationship sa pagpalabas ng film pero iyong mga advocacies na from the films, nagiging advocacy na ng office namin.

“Halimbawa, if anyone of you watched it, iyong Ka Dodoy, protection ng environment eh protection ng mangroves, pag-asikaso ng fish supply. And si Ka Dodoy, nakasama namin sa maraming Angat Buhay sites ng opisina namin. Ang ginagawa ni Ka Dodoy, tinuturuan niya iyong mga fisher folk na ino-organize namin kung ano iyong ginagawa nila sa Kabasalan, Zamboanga Sibugay para ma-replicate. Marami ding iba na mga champs na nakakasama din namin sa mga biyahe.”

Sa ibang okasyon ay ini-launch na rin ang Istorya ng Pag-asa coffee table book.

“Ang sponsor naman nito is the Istorya ng Pag-asa Camarines Sur core group and they are here this afternoon. I-recognize ko lang sila Bebot Perez, Ningning Belmote, and Andy Belmonte. Tapos iyong three of the very inspiring people that we featured in the coffee table book are also here Jem Baldemoro, RP Patriarca at Gran Ganapan O’Neil. They are some of the stories we featured doon sa coffee table book. Very, very inspiring,” pahayag ni VP Leni.

Ngayong 2019 ay mas malaki ang premyong matatanggap ng mga mananalo sa Istorya ng Pag-Asa Film Festival.

“Mas malalaki ang prizes ngayon, Best Film will receive P100,000 tapos iyong First Runner- Up will receive P50,000. Tapos iyong Second Runner - Up will receive P30,000.

“Aside from the three major awards, we are also giving special numbers for the Best Film, Best Director, Best Cinematography, Best Editing. Tapos iyong People’s Choice Award, we launched this for the first time during the Second Film Festival, ito, bumoboto iyong mga tao. And Ayala Foundation gave a Community Development Award tapos ang Office of the Vice President naman gave a Special Recognition Award. And we will be giving those special awards still for the third Istorya ng Pag-asa Film Festival,”paliwanag ni Ms Leni.

Ang deadline for submission of entries ay sa March 27, 2020.

Tinanong si VP Leni kung pagkatapos ba ng termino niya bilang ikalawang pangulo ng bansa ay itutuloy pa rin niya ang proyekto.

“Kung pagbibigyan ako gusto kong ituloy,”sambit niya.

Nabanggit din na hindi kilalang mga artista ang gaganap sa mga pelikulang isasali sa festival dahil mas gustong mag-focus sa filmmakers at istorya ng mga ordinaryong tao hindi dahil sa artista.

Kasama ni VP Lenis a presscon si RJ Baculo ang direktor ng Breaking Through the Darkness at si Al Quizon na bida sa pelikulang Obra.
